The Lord of the Discs

Paul Oakenfold is the man often credited with popularising dance music as we know it today. Does that make you want to thank him or hit him? A thousand people certainly thanked him when he came to Warsaw last weekend, although Poland was behind even Alaska on his list of places to play. The party at Focus Filtrowa certainly seemed to go off well. We caught up with him the day after his first night in Warsaw for a chat.
NWE: What do you think of the local DJs?
PO: Very interesting. I like the way they all work with the crowd, I think that's really good. Each DJ has their own style and their own sound. I think that for a country, because they obviously weren't just based in Warsaw, they came from all over, I think as a country it's got a lot of potential. I was very impressed.
NWE: What was your favourite moment last night?
PO: Hanging out with people. I spoke to a lot of local people. I found that Polish people, if you can open the door, they're very friendly.
NWE: What do you think of Poland so far?
PO: In respect of being here literally a day, I like it. We had a chance to go to the old town and have a look around this morning. I've tried some of the local foods. It's heavy food, I've been to Russia before and that's kind of heavy food too, pretty similar.
NWE: Is there any Polish music in your record collection?
PO: No. None at all. That's not through choice, that's purely because I don't know much. I was given a bunch of CDs last night, I was given some records as you're aware and hopefully there will be some Polish music in my collection.
NWE: What's your most rock star-like bad habit?
PO: Drink. I drink Petron (tequila) and Grey Goose (vodka). Probably too much.
