Whenever I go to the local shopping centre, I always see
a security guard. Today, I’m meeting one of them face to face.
Nice to have you with us, Mark. Could you first tell us a little
about your working hours. There is always a security guard on
duty when we go shopping. So, do you ever go home?
That’s a good question. We work in shifts. This means that
one week I work in the morning; the next in the afternoon.
One week every two months I have to work at night. I don’t
mind working at night, but the centre looks strange without
people in it, and sometimes it’s difficult to stay awake. It’s
also difficult for my children, who miss their bedtime story
when I’m on nights.
Whenever I see a guard looking at me, I always feel guilty.
Do you think everyone is a shoplifter?
There’s no such thing as a typical shoplifter. I remember
some amazing stories in the newspapers about famous
Hollywood actors and actresses. They were all millionaires
but they still went shoplifting! That’s why we have to keep
an eye on everybody that enters the shop. I’m sorry if it
makes you feel bad when shopping, but it’s part of our job.
There are, however, some people that we are more careful of.
We always keep an eye on groups of young boys. They often
take something small: sweets, a can of drink or some crisps.
It’s very easy to see them doing it. If we catch them the first
time, we tell their parents and hope that will stop them. But if
it happens again, we inform the police. It’s our duty.
And what kind of people shoplift? Is there one type of shoplifter
or many different types?
There is a big difference between someone stealing just to
show off to friends and someone stealing to make money.
Young people often steal things on impulse. But there are
also people who come to the shop in order to steal. I once
caught a man who didn’t want to show me what was in his
bag. I called the police. And when they searched the man
they found that the man’s trousers had specially-made
pockets and both trouser legs were full of stolen stuff. Later
it turned out that his house was full of stolen things. He stole
the goods and sold them at lower prices.
Thank you very much for talking to us.
