Mid course test: Speaking

Time allowed: 10–12 minutes

Ensure that students are au fait with the structure and format of the Mid-course Speaking Test
at least a week in advance of the test itself.

Task 1 (Radio Conversation)
From Campaign 2, use speaking task 2 (Unit 3, echo). You take the part of base station (D20)
and assign each student the part of vehicle patrol (D21).

Role play the task and assign 2 marks for each correct exchange (total 16 marks) and a mark
out of 4 for task completion. (Score out of a total of 20).

The key to the task can be found in the Campaign Teacher’s Book if required.

For test security, after every two candidates you may want to change the call signs; the names
of the towns in the task; the number of minutes students are closing down for; and the vehicle
patrol destination.

Allow five minutes maximum for task.

Task 2 (General Conversation)
Engage the candidate in general conversation on an everyday topic such as work, family,
hobbies for three minutes. Prepare a series of questions and ensure that candidates are asked
the same questions for any given topic.

Choose the topic(s) from any of units 1–6 in Campaign  2, perhaps focussing on the
Functional English sections to assist you with your question formulation/choice.

Task 3 (Individual long turn)
Before the test, select up to 10 different photos/illustrations from Campaign 2 (Units 1–6) and
prepare a list of general questions for each photo such as: What/Who can you see in the
photo? What is he/are they doing? Where are they?, etc. Encourage each candidate to talk as
much as they can about the chosen photo, but do interrupt if you feel that they have
memorised anything. Timing: 2–3 minutes.

Tasks 2 and 3 could be carried out over 1 or 2 lessons depending on the size of your class.
Mark parts 2 and 3 out of 20 each.

Note that we have not suggested adherence to any particular assessment scales as teachers
may wish to use these speaking tasks as practice for a forthcoming exam and as such, may
wish to apply established scales to the above tasks.
