The one thing I cannot give you in this guide is experience. The majority of clients who use this guide already have a reasonable understanding of the ins and outs of desktop PCłs and knowledge of software, reformatting etc. Obviously much of this knowledge will just transfer straight across to Laptops. The hardware all does the same job itłs just much smaller and barely serviced by your regular high street store. Repairing Laptops will enable you to escape being a friend of a friend who can repair a desktop for peanuts. Consumers still see Laptops as a specialist market and more often than not will assume they have to be sent back to the manufacturer for any form of repair or upgrade.

THEY DONłT!

The best part is they are becoming more and more affordable and many private & business sector consumers are now changing over from desktops to laptops. It goes without saying that the more people there are using them the more problems there will be.

BUSINESS IS EXPANDING DAILY!

To gain experience yourself my best advice is to work on at least half a dozen faulty Laptops prior to dealing with your 1st client. One great way is to buy a batch of half a dozen faulty machines off eBay. Mix and match the parts and you should end up with a couple of working machines that you can sell on for a profit or hold them in stock as loan machines to lend to your clients while you are repairing theirs. Either way the experience of how they come apart and more importantly go back together will stand you well.

Donłt rush or try to skip this stage without this small bit of experience you will struggle with cases that do not fit back together properly or worse still a cracked case on a clientłs machine.

Once you have your initial experience under your belt you need to decide if you are going to repair and sell used Laptops for profit or repair consumerłs machines.

If you are planning on buying faulty machines I suggest you go for the newest models you can do as these will give you the greatest profits. The most common problem with Laptops is no more than a faulty screen (a backlight or inverter) both of which you will find on eBay and at Ł12 - Ł25 is far cheaper than replacing the whole screen. Just do a search on ebay for laptop spares or repair and see how many come up..loads.

Read some of the descriptions of the faults they have, find the relevant repair manual on this disc and see just how easy the problem is to fix.

If you plan on repairing consumer machines start looking for clients by promoting yourself. I operate by running small line adverts in my local free papers and leaflets direct to homes and small business premises. I have included a copy of the leaflet I use myself, if you wish to use it all you need to do is add your phone number and get them printed off. Target small business parks 1st, then private housing. I try to regularly put out 1000 leaflets a week and more or less go back over the same area every 3 months.

How much can You Earn & What to Charge:

How much you charge really is up to you but DO NOT under sell your services. If you are looking for a healthy part time income just 2 repairs a week will give you an additional Ł200 a week working on the rates I do myself. Many people I know in this business are taking on 2 new jobs per day. Now thatłs a nice income and hardly a 35 hour week seeing as most repairs can be completed in less than an hour.

To get an idea on acceptable rates in your local area go through your local yellow pages and call some other established Laptop engineers. If you can find any at all they will be charging around Ł100+ for anything that involves taking a machine apart and around Ł40-Ł50 for a simple upgrade. I suggest matching prices of any local competition you may have. Why go cheaper? All that will do is force down the price eventually.
