Unfortunately, the author gives very little information about the operating principle. It is different from most other IB designs in that the TX and RX coils are part of a positive feedback arrangement that yields no signal as long as the RX field is balanced. When a metal target unbalances the field, the circuit beeps. This article appeared in the Sept/Oct 1980 issue of Elementary Electronics, which had just merged with Science & Electronics. It was published by Davis Publishing (later Ziff-Davis) and was eventually absorbed into Popular Electonics. Ziff-Davis sold the Popular Electronics name to Gernsback publishing, who eventually combined it with Electronics Now (formally Radio-Electronics) to produce the now defunct Poptronics magazine.
