Lymphadenitis is an inflammation of the lymph nodes. It may be caused by microbial invansion of the lymph nodes by bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. It can also be caused by trauma. It is very common and occurs with the common cold, bacterial sore throat, mononucleosis, and other common diseases. It is hard to distinguish a high power view of lymphadenitis from normal lymph node tissue unless large numbers of eosinophils are present, as with a parasitic infestation, or if there are large numbers of neutrophils, such as with an acute bacterial infection. In this slide, the diagnosis is easy as there are large numbers of neutrophils present--the small cells with multilobed nuclei and clear cytoplasm.
