Background
Job Number


In the C shell or Korn shell a job
number is assigned to commands (jobs) executed in the background.
There are several commands used to manage background jobs including
jobs, stop, fg, bg and kill.


Background
Process


Users can run a process in the
background by adding an ampersand (&) to the end of the command
line. Background processes run concurrently with other system
processes and shell programs. Users may want to run processes in the
background because they are time-consuming (in example, sorting a large
file or searching the file system for a file) or a user needs to start a
program and be able to continue interacting with the shell.


Backup


A backup is a copy of file system data
that is stored separately from the disk drive on which the data
resides.



Bourne
Shell





The Bourne shell is the default shell
for the Solaris computing environment. It does not have aliasing or
history capabilities. The Bourne shell prompt is a dollar sign ($).


Browser


A browser is a graphical program that
allows convenient access to the World Wide Web (WWW). The first
browser was Mosaic. Some browsers are Netscape NavigatorTM,
Microsoft Internet Explorer, and HotJavaTM.


BSD


Berkeley Software Distribution, one
of two main versions of UNIX that is not an industry standard but is
still fairly widely used. Some varieties of UNIX such as Linux are
based on BSD.



Bourne Shell

The Bourne shell is the default shell for the Solaris computing environment.
It does not have aliasing or history capabilities.


BUS
Topology





Early Ethernet LANs used a bus topology. A bus is a
cable (coaxial) that is run through an area, and workstations and servers tap
into the cable to get access to the network. The bus is a single length of cable
that is terminated at each end.
