Longissimus Thoracis (Superficial Erector Spinae)
Origin
In the lumbar region, blends with the
iliocostalis lumborum, posterior surfaces of
transverse and accessory processes of
the lumbar vertebrae, and anterior layer of
thoracolumbar fascia; passes medial to
the iliocostalis thoracis
Insertion
Tendons attach to the tipe of the
transverse processes of all thoracic
certebrae, and by digitations into lower
nine or 10 ribs between tubercles and
angles
Actions
Bilaterally, superficial erector spinae
extend the spine
Unilaterally, iliocostalis and longissimus
laterally flex (side bend) and rotate to the
opposite side
Nerve
Lateral branches of the dorsal primary
division of the spinal nerves
