Iron



Humans have made extensive use of iron from the earliest times. The Bible has numerous references to iron, from its use in common tools to a symbol of ruling power.


Tubal-Cain is the first worker of iron on record (Genesis 4:22).

An abundance of iron was among the blessings to be found in the promised land: "For The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land - a land with streams and pools of water, with springs flowing in the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees [see The Fig Tree], pomegranates, olive oil [see The Olive Tree] and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills." (Deuteronomy 8:7-9)

Iron was used in war Chariots (e.g. Joshua 17:18)

Swords were made of iron.

David had much iron wrought in nails and hardware for the Temple in Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 22:3). The weight totaled 100,000 talents, about 3,400 tons (1 Chronicles 29:7).

Iron had many figurative usages: a yoke of iron (Deuteronomy 28:48), a rod of iron (Psalm 2:9), a pillar of iron (Jeremiah 1:18), a furnace of iron (Deuteronomy 4:20), a bar of iron (Job 40:18), fetters of iron (Psalm 107:10).

One of the most famous miracles done by Elisha was making an iron axhead float in the waters of the Jordan (2 Kings 6:1-7)

"As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)
