SUBJECT: PERKINS 4-154 FUEL INJECTION PUMP TIMING CHANGE
The mechanically governed C.A.V. D.P.A. fuel injection pump static timing angle should be 18º BTDC on
Perkins 4-154 engines.
The timing specification of 23º BTDC is still correct for fuel injection pumps with hydraulic governors.
Static timing procedure:
1) Refer to Parts-Service Gram E-E-26 to establish the correct position of the internal timing ring.
Do not replace the pump inspection cover at this time.
2) Install the pump and all lines and cables. The scribed lines on the pump mounting flange and the
adaptor plate must be aligned.
3) Remove the engine valve rocker cover.
4) Rotate the engine until the number one piston is at T.D.C. on its compression stroke. T.D.C. can be
determined by  rocking the valves on number four cylinder (intake opening, exhaust closing), and
aligning the timing pin on the engine block with the timing hole in the harmonic balance.
5) Remove the valve keepers, collars and springs from the number one cylinder intake valve. Allow
the valve to rest on the piston crown.
6) Securely fasten a dial indicator to the cylinder head, so that the indicator plunger rests on top of the
valve stem. Set the indicator at zero.
7) Manually turn the engine opposite the direction of rotation until the valve has moved downward
0.150 in. (3.81 mm). Then, turn the engine in the direction of rotation (to take up timing gear
backlash) until the dial indicator reads 0.125 in. (3.17 mm) BTDC. This setting will establish 18º
of flywheel rotation BTDC.
Caution: The engine crankshaft must not be rotated more than specified; any greater movement could allow
the valve to drop into the cylinder.

8) At this time the letter  C on the fuel pump rotor should align with the straight edge of the timing
ring. (Refer to Gram E-E-17)
9) If the  C is not in alignment, loosen the fuel pump securing nuts and rotate the pump body to
achieve the correct alignment.
NOTE: The mounting flange and adaptor plate scribed lines do not have to be aligned at this
time.
Retighten the nuts.
10) Rotate the engine back to T.D.C. and reassemble the valve springs, collars, and keepers.
Replace the fuel injection pump inspection cover.
