Systolic Murmur Pitch
The pitch of a murmur is also important. Large pressure gradients between cardiac chambers cause higher pitch murmurs than those that occur when the pressure differential is less. The pressure generated when the left ventricle contracts and forces blood over a stenotic aortic valve is higher than when blood in diastole flows over a stenotic mitral valve. Consequently aortic stenosis has a higher pitched murmur than does mitral stenosis.
