With a last wild volley of shots, he shoved Truva's body away and leapt through the open door. The door crashed shut an instant later when he hit the emergency controls on the other side. Cursing, Coll shouted orders for Johnny to take some of the rebels and break through the door's emergency controls while the rest tended to Truva, who was unconscious and bleeding heavily. He darted to Dayra's side, suddenly terrified that one of Bardath's stray shots might have hit her. She hadn't been hit, but the minute her gag was out she began to cry. The crying only made her angrier, and Coll had to snap at her to stay still so he could unfasten her bonds. "That scum! That monster!" she raged. "He'll be sorry if he hurts Jason or Jeanella! Can't you get that off any faster? Thank the stars you're all right! When the message came through, when I thought you were taken prisoner, I. . . . Oh, Coll!" The last was uttered in a wail as Coll untied the last cord and swept her, trembling, into his arms. Coll's own hand shook as he pressed her head against his chest, tie buried his face in her tangled hair and held her even tighter, heedless of the tears that spilled, unchecked, down his cheeks. "Dayra, Dayra," he murmured, over and over again, as if her name were an incantation capable of dispelling the horror of the past hours. "I didn't think you'd come and I was so afraid," she whispered, her own tears thickening her voice.  < previous page page_419 next page >
