Every year on the 5th of November, people in most parts of Britain build big bonfires and make a dummy of Guy
Fawkes, called a  Guy . Guy Fawkes and his friends wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament on the 5th of November
1605 and kill everyone inside, including King James. Guy Fawkes and the other plotters were caught and in January
1606 they were executed. When people heard the news they made many fires in the streets to celebrate. They were
happy that their king was still alive.
Since that time people have had bonfires on the 5th of November. Children carry the Guy around the streets and say
 Penny for the Guy . With the money that they collect, they buy fireworks. Some people have a bonfire and fireworks in
their gardens. Others just go to a firework display in a park or a field. They have hot food and drinks to keep them warm.

B The date of Thanksgiving in the USA has changed three times but now it is the fourth Thursday in November.
A How old is the tradition?
B It dates back to the autumn of 1621. The people who travelled to America in 1620 on a ship called The Mayflower,
and survived their first winter there, learned from the Native Americans how to live in their new land. In the
autumn of 1621 they celebrated their first harvest. They wanted to give thanks not only for the harvest but also for
their new home, new life and new friends.
A What are the traditional dishes on that day?
B We always have turkey, pumpkin pie and autumn vegetables.
A Are there any other traditions then?
B Yes. There are a lot of football matches on television.
