Notes on the features of the FAR FTP plugin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and its operation with specific FTP servers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This file contains information of two types:
- plugin features
- known problems and specifics with some FTP server software

The file is divided into sections for different plugin actions:
1. "Speed"
Advice on configuring the plugin to achieve maximum/optimum file
transfer speed;

2. "Directory listings"
retrieving the list of files in the current directory from the server

3. "Command line"
notes on command line usage

4. "Copying"
features related to copying files

5. "Moving"
features related to moving files

6. "Deleting"
features related to deleting files from the plugin panel

7. "Various known problems and solutions / FAQ"
miscellaneous notes not related to a particular operation; Frequently
Asked Questions.

1. Speed
~~~~~~~~
The plugin CAN be configured so that it is at least as fast as other
FTP clients working on the same machine with the same server and similar
settings.
Data transmission speed between two machines that can be achieved by
different FTP clients depends on the following parameters:
- amount of data transferred to the operating system (socket API) in
a single batch;
- percentage of time that the program spends transferring data and that
it leaves to other programs.
Both of these parameters can be configured in the plugin.
The default amount of data transferred for new connections is specified in
the plugin configuration dialog. It can also be changed for specific servers
in the host panel.
The percentage of time the plugin gives back to the system is by default
configured for medium-speed connections (up to 10 Mbits). It may need to
be changed only if you have a faster connection (100 Mbits or more).
This parameter is configured by a registry setting according to the
instructions in TechInfo.reg.
Some advises:
a) Changing the amount of data transferred has the maximum effect on
performance. It can be changed in a very wide range - from tens of
bytes to tens of megabytes.
b) Most FTP servers working on Unix-like systems work best with small
buffers (on one site, top speed was achieved with a 50-byte buffer).
On the other hand, for Windows servers it is usually better to specify
large buffer size (transfer from an IIS working on the local machine
with a 8 megabyte buffer was only 30% slower than direct file copy).
c) CAREFULLY read the description of the parameters and remember that
the WaitXXX parameters establish a direct dependency between CPU load
and transfer speed. The better the speed, the higher is the CPU load,
and vice versa.
d) When configuring the WaitXXX parameters, keep in mind that after
finding an optimum speed with the current size of the copy buffer,
you may need to tune the copy buffer size again, because the behavior
of the socket API in high CPU load conditions can be significantly
different.
e) Remember that you are usually not the only user of the network. If the
transfer speed suddenly drops, don't immediately blame the plugin.
First, you should make sure that someone else did not start downloading
a movie or another big file from the same server and use up the network
bandwidth...
2. Directory listings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Different FTP servers generate different listings in response to the
same standard command.

1. Some servers generate directory listings with non-standard separator
characters. As a result, the plugin fails to parse the listing correctly.
To fix this error, you should change the listing command you use
("LIST -la" instead of "LIST" or vice versa).

2. Some servers do not understand the parameters of the "LIST" command
at all and return only directory names in the listing.
One known host with this problem is "ftp.timus.ru".
To fix this, change the listing command you use to "LIST" or switch OFF
the "Custom LIST command" option.

3. Some servers return wrong file dates and times or do not returns them
at all.
Keep in mind that the actual file time and date may not match the time
and date returned by the server.

4. For files created as symbolic links on the server, a small size is shown
(several bytes). The value shown is not related to the actual size of the
file to which the link points.
If you start downloading such files, the progress indicator will
immediately reach 100% and show that value until the download is complete.

5. The plugin DOES NOT understand links.
Links to directories will be shown as files.
To enter such a directory, type "CD " in the command
line.

3.1. Command line (common)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. You can invoke the plugin from the command line by using the plugin
prefix "ftp". The details of the prefix syntax are given in the plugin
help file.
2. You can set a shortcut to an FTP directory (using the standard keyboard
shortcut Ctrl+Shift+) and use it for quick access to the
directory.
The plugin saves all connection properties in the shortcut data and
uses them to establish the FTP connection.
3. The plugin understands the "http://" URL prefix but DOES NOT support the
HTTP protocol. If you enter a host with the "http" prefix, the plugin
will still connect to it as an FTP server.
3.2. Command line (FTP)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The plugin can execute FTP commands you enter in command line.
1. The plugin DOES NOT translate or change the text you enter in the command
line. It sends the command directly to the server and then processes the
text reply of the server.
For example, you can type "HELP" and see the list and syntax of FTP
commands supported by the server. This command is supported by most
servers.

2. When a command is executed, the plugin sends its text to the server and
receives a reply. It DOES NOT create a data transfer connection,
therefore you cannot execute commands that require data transfer.

3. The plugin cannot execute passive mode (PASV) transfers by itself, but
it is not too hard to execute such transfers using command line
commands and two open plugin panels.

4. Copying
~~~~~~~~~~
1. For the reason of security for temporary files, try to NOT copy or move
files between two FTP servers by opening two plugin panels at the same
time.
If you wish to copy files between two FTP servers, first download the
files to a temporary directory, and then upload files to target server.
2. The copy progress dialog may be fully customized (see the plugin Help
for details).
5. Moving
~~~~~~~~~
Plugin can perform rename(move) operation inside currently connected server.
Plugin perform rename on next conditions:
1. Rename - If Move and option "Move inside server" in download dialog is set.
2. Rename - If Move and target name does not contains '/' and '\' characters.
3. Rename - If Move and target name does not contains '\' characters and ends
with '/' character.
In ALL OTHER cases plugin interpret destination name as name on local disk!

Notes:
1. Plugin perform Rename operation ONLY if move (F6) action executed.

2. The plugin can correctly move the current item or selection to:
- the parent directory ("..");
- the directory specified as an absolute path ("/DestDir");
- the directory specified as a relative path ("../DestDir");
- between plugin panels if both are connected to the same server.

3. The move operation is successful ONLY if:
- the move source is a file (not a directory or a symbolic link);
- the target directory is accessible and the user has the right to create
files in that directory;
- the move target directory is located under the same mount point as
the directory containing the move source.
In other words, a move is possible when it can be performed by the system
utility "mv" (on Unix-like systems) or "move" (on Microsoft systems).

4. Target directories may start with the plugin prefix ("ftp:/DestDir").

Known problems
**************
Moving is a server-specific operation.
Not all servers understand all the ways to specify paths that you may use.
The following servers are known to have problems:
- WarFTP
Can not move files at all - creates an empty file in the target
directory and reports that a system error occured. After a rename or
move operation has failed, the server will fail all actions, until
you reconnect to the server.

- BlackMoon FTP server
Does not understand relative pathnames for move operations.
You may use an absolute pathname to specify the destination.

- BlackMoon FTP server
When a file is moved to the parent directory "..", reports a successful
operation, but does not actually create the file at the target location.
Thus, the file is lost.
The plugin handles direct moves to the parent directory ("..")
correctly, but if you specify a relative path containing ".."
("/Tmp/.."), you may lose your files.

6. Delete
~~~~~~~~~
Known problems
**************
- BlackMoon FTP server
a) Sometimes does not delete files without reporting any errors.
b) Sometimes does not delete files immediately after performing
another operation on the same files, and reports the following
error:
"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
other process"
You can retry the delete operation later, after the plugin
releases the files it was using, or keep retrying until the
operation succeeds.
7. Various known problems and solutions / FAQ
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BlackMoon FTP server
a) Often generates an error:
SIZE /HomeAlone3.avi
550 Requested action not taken
if you try to retry uploading a file after restoring a connection.
Looks like the error is caused by the same issue as the "file is
being used by other process" error when deleting files.

b) Looks like the server writes and reads data in a separate, slow
thread. As a result, if you upload a file or cancel uploading, you
cannot access the file until the server releases it completely.
For example, after canceling an upload, you cannot delete the file
you just uploaded for the next couple of seconds.

1 Q: The plugin cannot be interrupted during "Resolving address"
A: The possibility to interrupt this operation correctly has not yet
been implemented. Previous versions used an illegal way to interrupt
address resolving, and thus it has been removed.

2 Q: The plugin does not show the copy progress dialog when copying
a directory tree
A: The plugin uses the progress dialog to show the process of copying
FILES. Thus, if you copy an empty directory tree, there is no
progress to display.

3 Q: The plugin does not show the copy progress dialog when copying files
A: To reduce the usage of slow console output functions, the plugin
updates the copy progress dialog no more often than once in a certain
time interval. Currently, the interval is set to 0.4 seconds.
In other words, the copy progress dialog is drawn no more often than
about 3 times per second.
Thus, if the time of copying a single file is less than this interval,
the dialog for that file can be shown only once, or not shown at all.

4 Q: I try to enter a directory with a lot of files (several thousand).
The plugin shows that it is entering the directory, then waits for
something for a long time and aborts the operation by time-out.
FAR takes about 5 seconds to enter that directory. What is the
plugin waiting for? After all, I'm on a 100-Mbit LAN!
A: First of all, not all FTP servers are optimized for working with a
large number of files. If FAR takes 5 seconds to enter a directory,
other programs can require 10 times longer to do the same.
Second, some FTP servers (for example, WarFTPd) do not transmit the
list of files one by one while the directory is being scanned, but
rather send the entire list after the scan is complete.
If the plugin received some data, the time-out counter would be
reset. But the server does not send any data before the directory scan
is complete. Thus, all the time the server spends creating the list
is seen by the plugin as one long communication interruption.
If you are on a fast LAN and have a small timeout, the only way to
solve the problem is to increase the timeout so that the server has
enough time to generate the file list.

5 Q: I can see a directory but I cannot enter it. All the permissions
are configured correctly. The FTP server is IIS running under
Windows.
A: If you are using Cyrillic characters in directory names, I don't
know of a solution for this. The plugin transmits the filename
in the same encoding as it has received it, and that should be
used for transmitting, but the server fails to understand that.

6 Q: We have two Sun servers. Why does your plugin download files from
a Sun server much slower than a primitive client working on the
other Sun?
A: Did you also try running the plugin on a Sun, to compare the speed?
You should not compare the operation of the TCP/IP stack of different
operating systems. Two systems of the same type will always work
with each other differently from two systems of different types.
Not worse or better, but differently.
Parameters like file transfer speed depend on many factors, and you
should not compare these parameters under conditions that differ so
much and blame the plugin.
On the other hand, if you find a Windows FTP client that works
significantly faster than the FTP plugin, your bug report would be
most welcome.

7 Q: How to receive list of unix "hidden" files with names starting with ".",
character, for instance ".bash_profile" ?
A: To use extended listing command.
The common used command for this operation is: "LIST -la"
