Image Number 78 - Liver, alcoholic steatosis

This is an excellent example of alcoholic steatosis-fatty change of the liver-due to acute or chronic consumption of excessive quantities of alcohol. The band of large white cells seen in the center of the field are hepatocytes which have become filled with lipid. This is called macrovesicular fatty change. Normal sinusoids and cords of normal hepatocytes are seen in the bottom right and the upper left portions of the screen. Lipogranulomas may occur with fatty change, however, none are seen here. No inflammatory cells are seen within the field. Therefore this is not alcoholic hepatitis.
