In the USA of the 1920s we used to save energy in lots of ways.

One of our needs was shoes. Each child 1 ___ two pairs a year - a summer pair and a winter pair. Those new shoes were for special occasions, which meant mostly school and church-going. We 2 ___ barefoot to school until the cold weather came, to protect the shoes. Once my father 3 ___ me walking to school with my shoes on. He was so angry.
