Gdansk is an ideal town to visit. It has been one of the most significant cultural centres in Poland for centuries. From the 16th century onwards the city, as a major port and trade centre, has also played an important role as an European culture-creating centre. From its beginning Gdansk has been a specific melting pot of nationalities where different customs, religions and cultures mingle in an atmosphere of tolerance.
