4 I usually wake up at 7 a.m., but I don't get up until half an hour later.

6 On Sunday I don't have to do anything in the morning so I can have a lie-in.

7 If I don't hear my alarm clock in the morning, I oversleep and have to rush to work.

Lesson 4

1 Maritza's very happy because she's passed her exams.

2 After Tony left university he took a year off to travel around the world.

3 Anna went to a very good university, but she didn't like it at all.

4 He failed his driving test, so he has to take it again in September.

5 Did you know Cristina has a degree in business administration?

6 Which is more important for getting a good job - qualifications or experience?

7 Oscar got very good grades in the end of term exam.

8 On the first day they had to take a test to find out their level of English.

Lesson 5

1 I started studying chemistry, but it was really hard, so I changed to an easier course.

2 If you speak Spanish, learning Italian should be relatively straightforward as they're both Latin languages.

3 I had absolutely no trouble installing that new software. It was a piece of cake.

4 It's not impossible to get a permit to work in Australia, but it's quite complicated.

5 Bringing up two children alone is manageable, but it's not easy.

6 It's a very straightforward problem. You should be able to solve it.

7 Running a marathon is tough, even if you're well prepared.

8 It was no trouble finding an apartment in Rome. It only took me a day and a half.

Lesson 14

I went to my cousin Henrietta's 1.wedding last weekend. She married a really nice guy called Charles. I've never met him before although he's been her 2.fiancé for a couple of years now. Anyway, they invited all their friends and family and there were over three hundred 3.guests in

total. They're not very religious, so it was a 4.civil ceremony. Henrietta looked lovely and she seemed to really enjoy herself, but Charles was the most nervous 5. groom I've ever seen. After the ceremony we went to the 6.reception at the Royal Hotel. It was really good - the food was excellent, and Charles's friend, Tony, who was the 7.best man, made a very funny speech. And you'll never guess where they've gone on 8. honeymoon. Jamaica! I'm so envious!

Lesson 15

1 I didn't learn anything on that course. I feel like I wasted my time.

8 If you always print out all the e-mails you receive, you're just wasting paper.

Lesson 16

4 That music sounds like it comes from Africa.

5 It looks like it will rain later.

6 This soup doesn't smell very appetising.

7 Franz loves the sight of the sun rising.

Lesson 17

1 Anna is a very calm person. She never gets angry about anything.

2 There was so much noise in the bar, I couldn't hear what Dimitri was saying.

3 Taking exams can be a very stressful experience.

4 Tom Hanks has had a lot of success in his career. He's won two Oscars.

5 In some countries people believe that wearing yellow clothes brings bad luck.

6 They can afford to live in a big, expensive house and drive a Rolls Royce. They must be wealth.

7 When I was younger I played lots of sports, but now I don't seem to have the energy.

8 Hassima was very happy when I told her the good news.

Lesson 18

1 I watched the news on CNN and then turned over to MTV.

2 Would you mind turning down the heating a little? It's quite hot in here.

3 You forgot to switch off the lights before you left. When I came home they were all on!

4 Natasha never switches on her mobile phone. I don't know why she has one.

5 Can you turn up the TV? I can't hear it very well.

6 Luis was late for work again this morning, because his alarm clock didn't go off.

7 I was surfing the Internet until late last night. I switched off my computer at one in the morning!

8 Do you mind if I switch on the radio? I like listening to music when I'm driving.

Lesson 19

1 I was very lonely when I first arrived in Tokyo, because I had no friends and I missed my family.

2 I'd really like to spend a week alone on a desert island, with nobody else around. Just me.

3 I don't like my son being in the army. I'm worried that something terrible will happen to him.

4 Suki's very nervous because she's going to meet her boyfriend's parents tomorrow.

5 Hannah's determined to become a professional dancer, no matter what it takes.

6 Montse's been working all night. She's completely exhausted.

7 We had to make an emergency landing. All of the passengers were scared.

8 Werner's very experienced - he's done lots of different jobs and lived in five different countries.

Lesson 20

1 Marina works as a chef in an Italian restaurant.

2 He loves hamburgers and take-away pizza. He's a real fast food addict.

3 You need to boil this pasta in water for five minutes.

4 Put the champagne in the fridge so it cools down a little.

5 I love the smell of fresh coffee in the morning.

6 I like to have a very big breakfast. I think it's the most important meal of the day.

7 Could you bring me a spoon to eat this soup?

8 For the first course, I think I'll have the paté, and then the roast beef.

Lesson 21

1 Can I take this small bag on the plane with me as hand luggage?

2 My mum asked me to buy her some perfume in the duty-free shop.

3 Patrice was stopped at passport control because his visa was out of date.

4 The boarding card shows us which seats we're in.

5 I was quite nervous about flying, but the cabin crew were very kind to me.

6 Oh no! Look at the flight-information screen! The plane's been delayed two hours!

7 I have a frequent flyer card, so I can use the business class check-in desk, and I never have to queue.

8 Let's not go through to the departure lounge yet. There's nothing to do there.

Lesson 22

1 She's a very successful businesswoman. She started her own company and now she's a millionaire.

2 Their new record is very original. I've never heard anything like it before.

3 Everybody knows Tom Cruise. He's a very famous movie star.

4 I think he's a very talented writer, but his books don't sell very well.

5 Flared trousers were fashionable in the 1970s.

6 Abba are the most popular Swedish pop group ever, but I can't stand their songs.

7 The concert wasn't just good. It was absolutely brilliant.

8 Pelé was a legendary Brazilian football player, who played in four World Cups.

Lesson 23

1 You throw a dice and move your pieces the number of squares on the dice. [board game]

2 I admit I'm an addict. I spend hours playing in front of the screen. [computer game]

3 The most powerful piece is the queen. She can move in any direction. [chess]

Lesson 28

1 The police arrested seven men in a dawn raid in South London this morning.

3 Visits are allowed once a month, but only under strict supervision .

4 Prisons are usually overcrowded. There are often three people in one small cell.

5 The mail was only delivered once a week.

6 The prisoners have to stay in their cells 18 hours a day.

7 The rules were very strict and if you disobeyed them you were severely punished.

8 The warders wore blue uniforms, and some of them carried guns.

Lesson 29

3 I couldn't believe it when he offered me a bribe!

4 She made contact with him at a trade fair in Frankfurt.

Lesson 30

Lesson 32

The floor is covered in dust so I have to 3. vacuum it. I haven't done the 4. dishes from breakfast this morning, and I've just washed some clothes and so I'll need to do the 5. ironing. We went for a drive in the country yesterday and I need to 6. wash the car. Lesson 33

3 I've been lifting heavy boxes all afternoon, and now my back really aches.

5 I think I've got something in my eyes. They are itching very badly.

6 Be careful not to cut yourself on that broken glass.

7 I hit my toe on the table leg and now it has swollen up to twice its normal size.

8 Don't be afraid of the dog. He won't bite you.

Lesson 35

1 There are five players in a basketball team.

2 Rosa's family is very large. She has seven brothers and sisters, and dozens of nephews and nieces.

3 In modern industrialised society, people are very stressed.

4 She's really into West African culture; the music, the art ... she's even learning one of the languages.

5 There were four generations of the same family together at my cousin's wedding.

6 I don't know why people waste money on expensive gold watches. I suppose it's a status symbol.

7 We have to try and work together, like a team.

8 We need to look after the environment now, or future generations may have serious problems.

1 There was a very good advert on TV last night.

2 We want to expand into the European market.

3 They are putting their new product on the market next spring.

4 We have to increase our marketing budget.

5 Starting a new business requires a lot of planning.

6 Do you think we should advertise on the Internet?

7 The bank manager was impressed by our business plan.

8 They produce a lot of wine in California.

Lesson 37

1 Have you been in touch with your cousin, Stefan, recently?

2 I've sent a Christmas card to Liz for the last three years, but I never get one from her.

3 I can't keep up with the names of my sister's boyfriends. She seems to have a new one every week!

4 I'm relying on you to support me. That's what friends are for.

5 When we were on holiday in Tenerife we made friends with a couple from Belgium.

6 I keep in touch with my friends in Australia by e-mail.

7 She met Lucy at primary school, and they've remained friends ever since.

8 They are not very happy about David's exam results.

Lesson 39

1 I went to the sales yesterday and got a bargain. These shoes only cost me five pounds!

2 I like going window shopping, but I don't usually buy anything.

3 We bought this rug in a market in Morocco. We haggled for an hour before we agreed on a price.

4 I'm not sure this shirt is the right size. Can I try it on?

5 I've been shopping around for a new computer, but I can't find one I can afford anywhere.

6 My new microwave oven didn't work so I took it back to the shop and they gave me another one.

7 You should get a refund from the shop if you aren't satisfied. I'm sure they'll give you your money back.

8 My new sofa is horrible. I bought it on impulse, and now I wish I'd thought about it a bit more.

Lesson 40

1 She has very good qualifications. She has a degree in Maths, an MBA from Harvard University, and a Diploma in Marketing.

2 What would you like to achieve in the future? In other words, what are your long-term goals?

3 I got the job because my last boss wrote me a really good reference.

4 I'd like to get a better job with the same company, but it's impossible. They're are no promotion prospects.

5 She's just left school and she's never worked before, so she has no experience.

6 What are your strengths, Mr Willis? I mean, what are you good at?

7 What areas do you need to improve. What are your weaknesses?

8 In my new job they told me I would have to work under pressure.
