Introduction
My name is Jolanta wlodarczyk. I am a Health Care Assistant (HCA) working in a nursing home. I am discussing the ABC model. The ABC model looks at behaviour that when misunderstood and managed inappropriately may escalate.
The activating Event what was the trigger this could be noise or another resident. What kind of behaviour resulted? What was the consequence? The ABC model attempts to discover when the behaviour took place, where it took place, what was happening at the time, and what was the response of others? This Behavioural Analysis places the resident at the centre of our understanding and acknowledges the communication difficulties that can hinder discovery. Using this model we can understand better what triggers these reactions and discover the reasons behind the behaviours and this will help us deal with the situation better in the future and understand the person, and the behaviour.
Description of the Resident and Situation
Mary is lady with dementia she refuses personal care especially showers. She shouts and refuses to have the shower, and takes a long time. She likes everything her own way and everything in a particular place.
What are the possible triggers?
Mary is in bed and does not want to get up for the shower She is tired and may be in pain and does not like being showered She does not want to be rushed and cannot understand why the (HCA) will not do things her way.
What behaviours were demonstrated?
Mary is angry upset and angry this results in her shouting screaming and making threats at staff. She will not cooperate and can be very stubborn. She takes a long time folding tissues and wants everything organised her way
How might you deal with this in the future?
I will leave Mary until last in the future this will give me more time and I can let Mary fold her tissues and put things in place as she wants them. I will encourage her and ask what she would like to wear and tell her how good she will feel and look after her shower
What are the possible consequences of this Challenging Behaviour
Mary’s has unmet needs. She takes a long time and slows other people down. She causes frustration among staff and can make staff feel inadequate. This makes it very difficult to give Mary the best possible care. Her behaviour makes Mary unhappy.
Conclusions
Describe the limitations of this model in dealing with residents with dementia
The limitations of this model are we may not always have the time to spend with Mary. Some residents may be very agitated and it is more difficult to communicate with them.
Any Other Conclusions
By finding the underlying problem that is causing the challenging behaviour and the triggers that set it off we will understand why the person is behaving in this way. As a result we will be able to deal with this more effectively and make the individual and the people around the individual happy. This will also help the other residents who are affected by challenging behaviour.
