About the protection:
After applying the patch you can produce your CDs without any special equipment. Because the CDs are identical, you can run a program tool on one CD which builds an extract code for the CDs. This code is like a fingerprint. With the installation of the CD, the code will be installed. From then on the software only runs when the original CD is in the drive. Otherwise the program may refuse to run.
The protection system itself is used since 1984.
Copying CD Cops protected software is actually not possible. No known CD copy program is able to handle the protection, not even CloneCD or Nero. Therefore you have to use decrypters as work-around.
