More and more people are discovering the attractions Alaska has to offer. In few parts of the world can you find such unspoilt natural beauty and still have the conveniences of home.

When to go

The peak travel season runs from July to mid-August. At this time, travelers can enjoy the midnight sun as well as the many festivals and events taking place during the 24 hours of daylight. For those who have the Northern Lights on their agenda, be warned: from November to February temperatures are about -50 F (-45 C)!

Calendar events

Most Alaskan towns celebrate the summer solstice on June 21. It is the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year. You can join in midnight baseball or try your hand at log chopping, axe tossing and tree climbing events. Independence Day, too, is celebrated with parades and various contests. It ends in a spectacular fireworks display. In late July, Fairbanks hosts sports events, parades and contests to commemorate the discovery of gold there.

Visa requirements

Most visitors require a visa. Canadians, however only need proof of citizenship. Citizens of the following countries can stay up to 90 days without a visa: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, New Zealand, Japan and the U.K. Please direct any questions to a U.S. consulate or embassy in your area.

Places to visit

There's so much to see in Alaska. Visit Glacier Bay National Park and take in the views of the mountains, icebergs and beautiful forests. Or take a cruise ship and watch it all go by from the comfort of your viewing deck. Then, there's Juneau, the capital, also known as “Little San Francisco”. From here, you can also visit the popular drive-in glacier. Or stay in Sitka on the Pacific coast - a city which lies in the shadow of a volcano and is home to the Sitka National Historical Park with its fifteen totem poles. But no visit to Alaska would be complete without a trip to Anchorage - the state's largest city. There's so much Anchorage has to offer, including museums, traditional Alaskan beer, and the unforgettable Earthquake Park.

Accommodation

The prices at a 5-star hotel, which also offers rooms with wheelchair access, range from $150 - 200 per night plus 8% tax. Prices at a 3- or 4-star hotel can vary from $ 20-150, while a budget room is about $ 10 - 20. Reasonable bed and breakfast accommodation can be found in most towns.
