CANTERBURY

2. Sit of Archbishop of Canterbury (second important person in Church of England after the Queen)

   Canterbury Cathedral - historically famous building, because of conflict between Henry II and Thomas Beckett. Beckett's tomb is in the Cathedral and it has been a place of pilgrimages.

4. “Canterbury Tales” - fist book in modern English. It described pilgrims (there are different museums with characters from Canterbury Tales)

BRIGHTON

1. Unusual holiday resort

2. Brighton Pier

3. Dr. Russell wrote about good effects of salty air and people started coming to Brighton

4. King George IV made it famous

5. Royal Pavilion - palace built by George IV it has exterior in Indian style and interior in Chinese

6. “London by the sea”

HASTINGS - a battle in 1066 won by William the Conqueror (Norman king)

ST. ALBANS

1. One of the oldest towns, built by Romans

2. It was quite big and important town. We know that because it was a Roman theatre there (theatres were built only in larger cities)

DOWNS - kind of national park. Chalk rocks near Dover (Seven Sisters)

DOVER - shortest distance between UK and continent (Dover-Calais).
