There were 141,892 fuil-time equivalent (FTE) police officers in the 43 police forces of England and Wales as at 31 March 2007. This is an increase of 369, or less than one per cent compared to a year earlier.

There were 5,540 minority ethnic officers, 3.9 per cent of the total police strength, compared with 3.7 per cent on 31 March 2006.

The police officer strength figurę for the 43 forces of England and Wales as at 31 March 2007, calculated on the old basis which excludes those on career breaks or maternity/patemity leave was 140,032 (see text box on page 4).

The total number of police community support officers in the 43 police forces in England and Wales was 13,497, up 99 per cent on the previous year.
