Bj: French militiaman, early i2th century This man has very simple eąuipment, except for his framed iron helmet. He has a knife and buckler shield for close combat but carries a substantial staff-sling, perhaps to hurl rocks at the defenders of a castle. (Main sources: carved capitals, late nth-early i2th cents. in situ church, St. Nectaire; n ory chess piece, Southern French i2th cent. C: Second half i2th century:

Ci: Spanish mercenary knight in service of English Gascony, 0.1187-88

This knight has an extraordinary helmet seen for a few years in Castile and Cantabria. It appears to be madę of an ordinary forward-tilted helmet, plus a rigid visor and an additional neck protection at the back. This man has a new form of low-domed helmet

without a nasal; his long-bladed weapon is shown in various illustrations and may be the faussart of the written sources.
