Hindu Pillar Stitch: (worked in rows; multiple of 4 sts + 1)

Row 1: (RS) KI, *p3tog but do not drop sts from left needle, k3tog (same 3 sts) but do not drop from needle, p3tog (same 3 sts) and drop sts from needle, kl; rep from * to end.

Row 2: (WS) Purl.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 for patt.

NOTES

♦ If there are not enough stitches to work a complete repeat of Hindu pillar pattern while shaping armholes and neck, work those stitches in stockinette.

Needles Sizes 4 (3.5 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm): 24-36" circulars (cir), depend-ing on selected size. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge. Notions Markers (m); tapestry needle; stitch holders; size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook.

Gauge 26 sts and 32 rows = 4" in St st on larger needle; 32 sts and 36 rows = 4" in Hindu pillar st on larger needle.

BODY

With smaller cir needle and the tubular method for 1x1 rib (see Glossary), CO 194 (218, 242, 266, 290, 314) sts. Place marker (pm) and join in the rnd. Work in 1xrib (see Stitch Guide) for 1 Zi”. Change to larger needle and pm as foli: K24 (27, 30, 33, 36, 39), Pm, k49 (55,61,67, 73, 79), pm, k48 (54, 60, 66, 72, 78), Pm, k49 (55, 61, 67, 73, 79), pm, work to end. Work in St st (knit every rnd) until piece measures 53/4" from CO.
