They were proud of what was very much to their disgrace. The pores of their skin were choked with clotted grease and dirt until they could not perspire, while their muddy complexions or flabby appearance were infallible signs of their unwholesome condition.

If the functions of the skin are wholly interrupted, death will ensue in the course of a few hours. Who does not know the storę- of the little child who was to represent the Golden Age in a procession at the acces-sion of Pope Leo X,and had its whole body gilded over ? A few hours afterwards it breathed its last in convulsions.

lt is very right and proper to be in a perspiration before one takes a bath, but the respiration, and, especially, the pulsation of the heart should have become normal again. With regard to the heart, it is of the very greatest importanco that breathing be never neglected : not for one moment must the breath be hcld during the performance of any exerci$es. but it must be inhaled and exhalcd deeply, quietlv, and uninterruptedly through the nose all the time. It is absolutely neccs-sary that the air one brcathes should be good. Conscquently, if exer-cises are to be performed in the moming in the bedroom. immediately on springing out of bed. the lat ter should be coeered up again as quicklv as possible (of course to be properly aired latcr oni, and then the exer-cises may be done, provided the Windows have been open all mght. If not, they must be performed in another room, the window of which has been open during the night. 1 can, howeeer, liardly be!ieve that anyone who takes the least intercst in his or her health would sleep without giving f ree cireulation to the fresh air through open Windows.

If afraid of not being warm enough at night, during the winter, it is very much better to put morę clothes on the bed, or warmer night-garments on, than to close the window. The air you inhale can, and should, be cool and fresh.

A very practical modę of procedurę just as effectiee, but consider-ably cheaper than a lurkish or Fmnish bath—is to run or walk quickiy homo from work, so as to get into a heavy perspiration. then take a bath at once, and perform some rubbing exercises, before dressing again for the midday or evening meal. You must of course put other clothes on, at any ratę, other underclothing. Let me, at the same time, cali attention to the fact that it is an unhealthy and uneomfortable habit to wear the same underclothing night and day ; what is worn during the mght ought to hang up to air during the day-time. When hardened you might ftnd it pleasanter to lie qutte unclothed in bed, at all events in the summer. For long enough I took no other exercise than the abo\e-mentioned run horne, with a bath and rubbing exer-cises afterwards, and yet kept in splcndid condition. And no one can say that it cost either time or money, as 1 got home morę quickly than by 'bus, and saved my money.

No one ought to take a cold bath unless comfortably warm. The morę one is perspiring, the colder one can bear the bath. and the morę enjoyable it will be. But if one be feeling cold. and for any reason cannot restore the cireulation, the bath should be warm.

When, during the summer, it is possible to bathe out of doors. the daily exercises can be performed at the bathing place. After a fairly long swim, if cold, rubhing exercises will be the best means of restoring the cireulation. It is a very good plan to undress at once ; in the sun-shine especially, you do not want to keep your clothes on for the exercises
