Mounts

Possibly a strap-plate, though the sheeting is rather thin (cf no. 1049).

1052    SWA81 806 (2103) 12 fig 51 9xl9mm; engraved linę border around central lozenge; engraved zigzags in surrounding triangular fields; tin coating; holes in centre and for two iron rivets, which attach it to a leather strap 28x23mm (tom off at one end, possibly at both).

For associated buckie, see no. 343.

There is a similar mount on the strap in colour pl 5E.

1053    BWB83    5833    (310)    12

Mount as preceding, but 13x23mm; no obvious coating; one iron rivet survives.

1054    SWA81    1792    (2102)    12    fig 123

As preceding item, but 13x29mm.

1055    SWA81    2069    (2169)    12

As preceding item, but 13x29mm.

Iron

1056    BC72    2554    (83)    11    fig 123

Three mounts, c.llx9mm, with central ridge width-ways, tin coating, and single rivet, on short strap no. 1175.

1057    BC72    2622    (89)    11    fig 123

40x9mm; corrugated profile; tin coating; on short strap no. 1170.

1058    BC72    3879    (150) 11    fig 232

Four mounts, varying between 30x11 and 32x8mm, with corrugated profile, and two rivets with roves; tin coating; on purse no. 1701 together with circular mounts no. 894.

1059    BC72    4287    (150) 11    fig 123

Incomplete; 17x34mm; raised bar at each edge with row of bosses; sides apparently concave; tin coating; one of two rivets survives.

1060    BC72 2555 (2109) 12 figs 123 & 124 Five mounts, each 12x25mm (two are broken in two) with a central hole and two rivets with copper-alloy roves; tin coating; on leather strap 168x26mm (cut at one end, tom off at the other); further rivets indicate that two other mounts have been lost; the strap has been crudely pierced at each of the holes in the mounts, which are scratched on the front, particularly those near the cut end of the strap.

The one at the point where the strap is cut could have acted as a strap-end, while the holes in the leather (not present where the missing mounts were fixed) and lengthways scratches may suggest use with a buckie.

Rectangular— domed centres, with separate rivets

Copperalloy

1061    BWB83    3667    (359)    12    fig 125

Probably cast; brass (AML); 15xl4mm; bevelled at edges; hole for single missing rivet.

1062    BWB83    3996    (292)    12    fig 125

17xl8mm; engraved double perimeter linę; holes for four missing rivets.

A similar item was found at Castle Acre Castle (AR Goodall 1982, 238-39 no. 41 fig 44).

Sąuarish mounts with a domed centre could be for book covers (cf Baart et al. 1977, 403 nos. 759 and 760 - these are both of post-medieval datę). The bevelled edges of no. 1061, which would make it flush with the surface to which it was attached (an unusual feature among mounts), might be particularly suitable for this purpose, but its single, central rivet is perhaps less appropriate for this. See also nos. 905 & 1099 for further possible book mounts.
