. . . But Godofridus (Godfred), before returning, destroyed thc emporium situated on the coast of the sea - which in the Danish language was called Reric and brought great advantages to his kingdom by payment of taxes. He removed the merchants from there and sailed on the fleet to a port, which is called Sliesthorp (Slesvig), with the whole army. There he remained for sonie days and decided to protect the border of his kingdom on Saxony, in such a way that, from a bay of the eastern sea, which they cali Ostarsalt, to the western sea, a defence rampart was placed on the cntire northem bank of the Egidora (Ejder) river, interrupted by only one gate, through which carriages and horsemen could be sent out and received. Having divided this work among the commanders of the troops, he returned home.
B. ANNALES FRANCORUM, 810 A.D.
. . . While he (Charlemagne) was dwelling there for some days, the elephant, which the king of the Saracens, Aaron (Harun), had sent him, suddenly died. When finally the troops were gathered, he hastened to the river Alara (Aller) as fast as he could, and after having set up camp near its mouth into the river Wisura (Weser), he awaited the outcome of the threats of King Godofridus (Godfred). For this king, conceited by a vain hope of victory, boasted he would meet the Emperor in pitched battle.
