Overview of Dynamie Address Assignment

Dynamieaddressing is the default addressing raethod in Windows XP Professional. In dynamie addressing, the DHCP server supplies an IP address

subnet mask, and default gateway to the client. If DHCP is unavailabie, an

alternate address is provided depending on the client configurations found in

the Alternate Configuration tab of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties sheet. The following options are available for alternate configuration:

^Automatic private IP address. The Computer will use a specified IP

address rangę.

User configu red. The Computer will use the alternate static IP configuration

that is specified in the Alternate Configuration tab.

If a static address is specified, this will be the only address that Windows XP

Professional uses to communicate, and alternate address methods will not be availabie.

Automatic address assignment does not allow the client to communicate

with hosts that are outside of the local subnet, including Internet hosts.
