Content Overview The PIX Security Appliance can be configured and managed by several methods such as command-line interface (CLI), SNMP, PIX Device Manager (PDM), Cisco Secure Policy Manager (CSPM), or CiscoWorks VPN/Security Management Solution (VMS). Depending on the existing infrastructure and network size, administrators should choose based on justified need and cost. For example, a network administrator can easily manage several firewalls using CLI or PDM. However, CSPM or VMS are better solutions for medium and large enterprise management.PDM is a powerful browser-based configuration tool designed to help administrators set up, configure, and monitor a Cisco PIX Firewall graphically. Cisco PDM does not require an extensive knowledge of the PIX Security Appliance command-line interface (CLI). However, knowledge of these commands is very important when troubleshooting problems and configuration errors. PDM has many advantages. However, preparation steps need to be taken on older PIX Security Appliance models, which do not contain the flash image. Operating as a Java applet, PDM easily downloads and installs once connection is made from the client to the PIX Security Appliance. Once familiar with the requirements of the PDM, the student will install PDM and use it to configure the PIX Security Appliance. The different configuration options will be explained, giving the student a good understanding of what can be accomplished with the PDM. Also, the student will use the PDM to create Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Finally, enterprise PIX Security Appliance management will be covered. Efficient management is important for medium and large networks in order to maintain a scalable, reliable, and cost effective network.   NOTE: It is required that the student study the commands covered in the chapter using the labs and the command reference. Not all required commands are covered in sufficient detail in the text alone. Successful completion of this course requires a thorough knowledge of command syntax and application.
