little was said of the individual social and professional groups which were described in a very uneven manner. This very generał way of writing madę that the image presented had very little in common with reflecting real sccial strata and structures of the countries visited by the journalists. It was also found that one-third of the journalists who madę trips abroad expressed no opinions at all as regards the phenomena they encountered, and that only. one-fiftiesnth presented critical opinions. The survey showed that the effects in writing depended to a great extent on psychophysical features of the authors, on their professional background and experience. Much better results were achieved by experienced journalists, specializing in this or the other field, who could speak well the languages known to the people living in the counties they visited. The correctness of approach to the subject and sharp-ness of the analysis of problems encountered increase with experience and age — to a certain limit — and with the amount of time spent abroad (minimum 2 weeks). A prior knowledge of the problems of the country to be visited (from the point of view of specialization) plays also ąuite an important part (Summary by the Author).

Teresa Lisicka:    Regional Divisions of the Press Documentation (Basic

principles of organizing a library)

The divisions of press documentation founded recently in various regions of Poland reąuire calling into being of a uniform system of press documentation services. The article, which is a part of a bigger elaboration — of a project of fitting-out and operating of the Documentation Division at the Krakowskie Wydawnictwo Prasowe, discusses the basie principles of collecting publications which are to serve as sources for the press. The chief principle is selecting the publications useful for giving a ąuick factographic information summing up to datę figurę, name or function of a person, name of a place etc. or of an information of a vocabulary-encyclopaedic type.

Having madę practical remarks concerning topicality and selection of items, the Authoress discusses in detail the individual parts of the library sucn as: encyclopaedias, vocabularies, biographic publications, dictionaries — divided into Polish and foreign, guides and informative publications, cartographic publications, bibliographies divided into objective and subjective, as well as different documents of social life (calendars, advertizing leaflets and prints, theatre programs, catalogues of exhibitions, price lists, reports, duplicated materials, etc.).

The elaboration takes into account the Polish and foreign poblications which appeared before and in the year 1974. Discussing individual groups of publications the Authoress gives practical advices as regards their purchase and classification from the point of view of their utility for the Polish press. The publication has the character of an instruction. This is among others expressed by the enclosed lists of appropriate Polish and foreign publications, telling what should be collected at the Documentation Centre in order to provide a ąuick, complete and reliable information. (Summary by the Authoress).

Zbigniew Tempski: Inside of the Editorial Staff

The Author reflects on the choice of the most appropriate formal structure of liaison, on the tasks of the head of the staff in organizing the work in the most efficient way.

The better is the organizational structure the better are the results of in-dividual divisions of the paper. The key problem consists here in preserving on all levels of that structure of a golden mean between extreme possibilities: paresis and overgrowth of liaison. A significant role falls to the heads of the staff, a great deal depends on how they will perform their work. The Author analyses the indications of the science as regards the organization of the heads' of staff work and afirms the usability of those indications also in reference to the editorial staff.
