ARA TI - A DEYELOPED FORM OF ARATRIKA 173

transfcrred lo image worship, the hymns *S rStrietc. were not in use and thcrefore, this became an obscure term.

(iii)    In the later literaturę a siight change is seen in the term as ‘SrStrika ’, most probably because the word ‘SrStrika' became obscure. Kalhana in the RSjatarańgini has used both the words SrStrika and SrSrtrika in the same sense.

Śartkara also has employed the word SrSrtika in many of his slotras.

We find ample examples of this word in the religious literaturę after lOth cen. A.D.

(iv)    It seems that the word SrStrika changed to Sratikya or Srtikya and these changes were based on an obscure word. To explain SrStrika originally mcant a ritc in which the verse ‘ S rStri was employed. When the conlcxl was changed, only the rilual was accepled and not the verse. Therefore, the relalion between the ritual and the term (which was tolally a part and product of a verse) became doublful and therefore, without taking into considcration the literał mcaning of the term il was changed to ‘SrSrtika'In the ncw contexl pcople might be having the term Srti, i.e., painful situalion in their mind which hclpcd the change in the laler dcvelopment, i.e., SrStikya or Srtikya This does not lit in the PSninian system. Since the origin of the term is obscure and not a product of PSninian derivational system, BhSraliya Samskrti Kosa says the origin of the term is ‘dcśi alhavS drSvid!’. However, it does not presenl the slagcs of the dcvclopmcnt. Thus, the word Srtikya which cannot be supported by grammatical operations is the stage which immcdiatcly prcccdcs the word Srali, and came into existence bccause of the wrong analysis of the word SrStika as ar-Srtika . It is definilely a product of SrStrika sińce we get bolh varialions in one and the same text. Bccause one cannot show proper grammatical dcrivations of SrSrtika or SrStikya and Srtikya, these words are not listed in the dictionarics. A MS. in the Adyar library shows the relalion between SrSrtika and SrSti in the variants of the litles. The tille of the MS. is Srali (Srali, SrSrtika) slotras indicating the time of waving of lights.

As comparcd to the use of SrSrtika, the words Sratikya and Srtikya are used less frcquenlly. We get these words in the Maharashtrian texts only. Therefore il is also possiblc that SrStrika gol changed to SrSti through SrStrika and later on Sanskritization of the term SrStilook place as Srtikya or Sratikya. The two pocts Moropanl and Kashinath Upadhyaya bcing Maharashtrians might have Sanskrilised the word. The verscs which employ the word Srtikya are found in th^ pujSprayogas of Maharashtrians17. Thus, herc we cannot deny
