Desperado
Imagine a scene in which a grim man, a loaded revolver in his pocket, is giving his last hug to his sons. A minute later he watches them going down in a lifeboat towards the dark icy sea.
But don't be lulled into thinking that's the beginning of a detective novel or a war story. The boys, Michel, not yet a 4 year-old and his younger brother Edmond, excited by the big plop of the life raft against the sea, don't seem to be aware of the tragedy they are part of. The unsinkable Titanic is just about to perish with their father on board.
So what's the story behind the man with the revolver? It's 1902, France. Michel Navratil senior gets married with Marcelle, a beautiful Italian girl, despite her parents' strong disapproval. Their happiness doesn't last long, though. Three years later the parents are successful in breaking the marriage up. Desperate, Michel decides to kidnap his two sons from their mother and start a new life with them in America. He gets on board the Titanic under the name of Hoffman hoping his still beloved Marcelle would join them one day. She did but only to reunite with her sons. And then only after she had learnt of their presence in America from a picture of her boys in The Times under the headline "The Orphans from the Titanic."

Greek Adventure
Thursday: August 8
Long awaited holidays have just begun. Here we are at the airport waiting for the check-in lady to take our luggage from us. We all feel relaxed even though the airport is packed with people running in all directions. It's really hard to believe that they are also holiday-makers. Some of us are so busy observing people that they don't even notice when a harsh voice announces our flight to Greece. Joe and Peter spend some money in duty-free shops. They are on their honeymoon trip. Friday: August 9
It's three o'clock in the morning. A group of eight people (this means: us!) try to break into a small hotel. Apparently, our travel agent didn't make the booking. The owners of the hotel are quite hospitable. They open the main door and offer some refreshments and stay with us at a table till six o'clock in the morning.
It's eight o'clock in the morning. We telephone the Greek office of our travel agency. Nobody picks up the phone. On hearing 'You can leave your message after the tone ...,' we leave one and hope that someone will listen to it. Saturday: August 10th
A young man arrives at our hotel. He introduces himself as representative of our travel agency in Greece. Encouraged by his innocent smile, we attack him with our complaints. To compensate for our discomfort on the arrival night, he spontaneously offers a one-day-trip to Mount Athos for which we don't have to pay. We hesitate at first, but then all of us agree to go. Sunday: August 11th
We go shopping. The town is packed with tourists. Some of them looking for good bargains, others - trying local delicacies. We come back to our hotel tired. Monday: August 12th
We admire monasteries spilling down on Mount Athos. The guide tells us that some of them are inhabited by just a few monks. The weather is fantastic so the sights are unforgettable. We take a few pictures from the boat. We can't take a photo of a monk. At least, not with our primitive cameras. Tuesday: August 13th
We plan our trip to Athens, a leading city of ancient Greece and the capital of modern Greece. The owners of our small hotel tell us that the prices in Athens are quite high. However, no one can put us off from going there. Being in Greece and not visiting Athens is like being in Rome and not seeing the Pope. Late at night we pack our bags because next day we have to leave early. We'll be in Athens on Wednesday afternoon.
