Drive Axle Repair
General
This section has the description and repair procedures for the drive axle, wheel bearings, and the mounts
for the axle housing. Information for the differential and ring and pinion gears is in the section Powershift
Transmission 1300 SRM 728.
Description
The drive axle assembly includes the axle shafts,
brake drums, hubs, spindles, axle mounts, and the
differential or axle motor housing. See Figure 1. The
drive axle is held to the lift truck by axle mounts.
These axle mounts are fastened to the frame of the
lift truck by alignment dowels and nuts and bolts.
The outer ends of the spindles are the mounts for
the wheel bearings. The wheel bearings are tapered
roller bearings with the cups pressed into the hub.
The nut on the end of the spindle holds and adjusts
the wheel bearings. The axle shafts are fastened to
the hubs by capscrews. The backing plate and brake
assembly are fastened to the axle mounts. The axle
mounts are also the hangers for the mast.
The wheel bearings are lubricated with wheel bear-
ing grease.

REMOVE AND DISASSEMBLE
WARNING
When putting the lift truck on blocks, make
sure the surface is solid, even, and level. Any
blocks used to support the lift truck must be
solid, one-piece units.
1.
Place blocks on each side (front and rear) of the
steering tires to prevent movement of the lift
truck.
2.
Raise the lift truck and place blocks under the
frame so the drive wheels are just touching the
floor. Place blocks under the counterweight to
maintain stability.
3.
Remove the mast assembly as directed in Mast,
Description and Repairs 4000 SRM 736.
WARNING
Deflate pneumatic tires completely before re-
moving them from the lift truck. Air pressure
in the tires can cause the tire and rim parts to
explode, causing serious injury or death.
4.
Remove the wheel assemblies from the drive
axle.
NOTE:
The following procedure is for one side of the
axle assembly. The procedure is the same for both
sides.
5.
Remove the brake drum. If the brake drum can-
not be removed easily, loosen the brake shoes as
follows (see Figure 1):
a. Make sure the parking brake is released.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to push the adjuster pawl
away from the adjuster wheel in order to turn the
adjuster wheel.
b. Place a screwdriver through the hole in the
back plate to turn the adjuster wheel and
loosen the brake shoes.
6.
Refer to Brake System 1800 SRM 734 for brake
system repair.
7.
Remove the capscrews from the axle shaft hub.
8.
Install two capscrews removed in Step 7 into the
two holes next to the alignment pins. Alternately
tighten each capscrew to remove the axle shafts
from the axle assembly.
9.
Disconnect the brake lines at the wheel cylin-
ders. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the
parking brake lever, and loosen the cable clamps
along the frame for the parking brake cable.
10. Drain the oil from the differential.
