Reading
Read the article and answer the questions.
1 Peter Kerr may not be a name you’ve heard
before, but he is probably one of Britain’s most
successful music producers. For the last fifteen
years he’s been collaborating with some of the
biggest names in world music, from Turkey,
Senegal, and India. He star ted his musical life
as a guitarist, but quickly realized that playing
an instrument wasn’t enough to keep him
interested – he wanted more control over the
direction of the music itself, and in 1989 he
produced his first album, paid for with money
he earned doing night shifts as a security
guard. It sold 30,000 copies – not a huge
number, but enough to get him noticed.
2 Recently he’s been working on various
television and film projects, including the
soundtrack for Out there, a major new TV drama
series. This will mean that he’ll be reaching a
larger audience than ever before, an exciting
prospect for someone who believes that all
popular music is good music. ‘I don’t believe in
musical snobber y,’ he says. ‘If people like it,
it’s good, it’s as simple as that.’
3 He says writing music for television won’t
change the way he works. ‘Some people say
that film or TV work is somehow more trivial
than producing “real” music, but I don’t see it
that way. It’s a chance to stretch myself in new
directions, and work with new kinds of people.
World music, film soundtracks, TV work, and the
chance to experiment with as many kinds of
music as possible. Is that an unattainable aim?
I don’t think it should be.’
4 In the immediate future Kerr is setting off on a
major European and US tour, travelling with a
small band of musicians and working with local
per formers in the countries they visit. ‘It’ll be
fantastic, but a bit unpredictable too – ever y
night I’ll be playing with people I’ve never met
before, and tr ying to combine our different
musical backgrounds to develop something
new. I’m confident it’ll work out well, and it’s a
great feeling when ever ything falls into place.’
We wish him luck.

Reading
1 Read the article and match the questions to the
paragraphs. There is one question you don’t
need.
A What is it used to treat?
B Are there any side-effects?
C What is acupuncture?
D How does it work?
E Does it hurt?
F Should I notify my doctor?
G Is there any evidence that it works?
1
C
…………
Acupuncture is an ancient treatment first practised in
China around 1,000 years ago. It arrived in Europe in the
17th century, but it’s really only since the 1970s that there
has been strong public interest in it.
2
…………
The traditional Chinese view is that energy flows through 12
main channels in the body, and if the flow is interrupted it
can cause illness. Inserting tiny needles and manipulating
them at particular points on the body restores the flow of
energy. It is believed the needles stimulate skin and nerves,
releasing the body’s natural painkillers.
3
…………
Some people have acupuncture to strengthen their
constitution . But it is commonly used for problems such
as stress, asthma, depression, skin conditions, and high
blood pressure.
4
…………
Most people feel relaxed and calm after treatment, but
you can feel tired and drowsy for several hours. In some
cases, symptoms of the illness can start up suddenly
before settling down again.
5
…………
Researchers in Germany published a study in 1999 showing
that volunteers saw significant improvements in their health.
6
…………
Yes, to be on the safe side. Never stop taking prescribed
medication without consulting your doctor first. The
acupuncturist should also be told what medicines you are
taking as it may affect your response.

Alive and flipping
ON A CORNISH BEACH, A
TALE OF SURVIVAL AGAINST THE ODDS
Trapped and tiring fast, the dolphin’s chances of
survival didn’t look good. As its skin slowly dried out, it
faced the prospect of a slow death.
But when RSPCA officer Felicity Cross arrived on the
scene, she decided there was one way the animal might
be saved. The 44-year-old animal collection officer
knew speed was important and by a lucky chance, the
dolphin was very near a riverside house – which had a
garden hose. Mrs Cross grabbed the hose and sprayed
water on the dolphin to keep it alive until a rescue could
be organized. ‘Fortunately the house was close to the
water, so I was able to take the hose about 30 metres to
the dolphin to keep him wet,’ she said.
She was joined by RSPCA colleagues, a team from the
British Divers Marine Life Rescue, staff from a seal
sanctuary at Gweek, and local vet and marine mammal
expert Paul Reilly. In an operation lasting more than six
hours, they lifted the dolphin onto a lorry to transport it
along the coast in
to refloat it in deeper water.
‘The vet examined him and said cuts on his body were
, so refloating him was a
option,’
said Mrs Cross. ‘He gave the dolphin some painkillers
and antibiotics and we waited while he regained his
strength, and the vet gave us the go-ahead
him.’
After its release the dolphin was spotted in shallow
water on Tuesday morning. Mrs Cross went to
investigate, and together with her team helped the
dolphin into deeper water. A boat followed it to make
sure it went out to sea – and saw it happily swimming in
the water.
Mrs Cross said: ‘We are very optimistic he is going to
be OK. It’s been a team effort and we’re all really
pleased.’

Shopping for men
Think about the last time you went clothes shopping. Did
you notice anything about the behaviour of your fellow
shoppers? If your experience was typical, you probably saw
relaxed groups of women looking at clothes together,
finding things they like, and asking each other for opinions.
But did you notice any groups of men? No, because men do
clothes shopping differently. You see them on their own,
you sometimes see them with their wives or girlfriends, but
you never ever see them in a group. Interestingly, a group
of men clothes shopping together is so rare that in several
shops the security guards are alerted immediately.
It’s a little-known fact that in Britain men now spend
more on clothes shopping than women. In the past an
interest in fashion was viewed with suspicion, but men
nowadays want to look good. But although spending money
isn’t a problem, there is one dilemma that the typical man
faces when he’s browsing in shops and trying on clothes. If
he’s shopping on his own, who can he ask for advice?
There seem to be two possibilities. One is your friends
(if they’re shopping with you). But asking other men their
opinion about clothes is a waste of time – they just want to
escape as fast as possible, and they’ll say anything they think
you want to hear. The other is the shop assistant – but you
can’t necessarily believe what he (or she) says. Shop
assistants just want you to spend money.
Gordon Black acts as a fashion consultant to the greyest
of businessmen and the most flamboyant film stars. His
recommendation is this: that men shouldn’t go to too many
different clothes shops. If you always go to the same small
number of clothes shops, and you always talk to the same
shop assistants, you’ll develop an understanding with them,
and they’ll be able to help you buy the things which really
suit you.
1 Circle the correct answer.
1 According to the article women
a feel confident shopping alone.
b like shopping in groups.
2 According to the article men
a often shop alone.
b never go shopping with their girlfriends.
3 When there is a group of men together, security
might be alerted because
a statistically more men steal from shops than
women.
b it is so unusual they assume the worst.
4 Men are now shopping
a as much as women.
b more than women.

The woman who sees
angels
A trick of the mind or a life-changing experience?
Read Sue Alexander-Clark’s story – then make up
your own mind.
On a night like any other, I went to bed at 11 p.m. with
my husband. When I woke at around 3 a.m., I found I had
been crying in my sleep. Then suddenly the room filled
with a beautiful golden light, almost as if the sun was
shining through the window. There, at its centre, my
grandfather William, then 91 and living in Norfolk, was
standing smiling at me, looking totally serene. He talked to
me, telling me that he was leaving the physical world, but
that he would be my guardian angel and always take care of
me in times of
.
As the vision
, I began crying. Stuart woke up and
comforted me, saying I had just had a bad dream. But ten
minutes later my father called to tell us that my grandfather
had just died. He had been a bit
, but we had no
idea that it was serious. That night 14 years ago had a
effect on me.
I have since learnt he is not the only angel looking after
me. Five years ago, I was working for a cosmetic company
setting up beauty salons all over the UK. After a long day in
Barnsley, Yorkshire, I set out to drive home to London. I
phoned Stuart to say I would be home in about three and a
half hours.
An hour later, on the M1 motorway, just as I began
overtaking a large lorry, another lorry
in front of
me. I tried to brake but a third lorry was moving quickly up
behind me. At this point, I heard a voice in my head saying:
‘Trust me, you must trust me.’ I took my hands off the
steering wheel, closed my eyes and waited for the crash.
Suddenly, there was total silence, a complete stillness, and it
was very dark. I thought I must be dead. I reached out and
found the steering wheel. Then I opened my eyes. I was still
on the road, driving in darkness at about 50 mph. There
was nothing else on the road – no lorries, no cars – although
the road had been packed with traffic. I was very upset, but
I was too afraid to stop.
At midnight, I arrived home. My husband was amazed
that it had taken me only two hours to complete a journey
of 200 miles.

appeared at Birmingham’s Party
in the Park at the end of August
with a new lip ring. ‘It’s really
painful,’ she complained to the
crowd. But it was discovered
later that the lip ring wasn’t real
at all, it was a clip-on imitation –
and the fat-lipped teenage fans
who had rushed out to copy her
didn’t think it was very funny.
A small lie may not be
, but a recent survey
found that, on average, people in Britain tell up to 20 lies
every day, and a
96% of women say they lie
when they feel they need to (and I have serious doubts
about the honesty of the 4% who claimed they are never
untruthful).
Many of these lies are what psychologists call ‘false
positives’, the kind of lies that serve a harmless social
purpose (‘Ooh, you look nice in that dress’, ‘The meal was
wonderful’, and so on). But there are growing numbers of
people who lie too much.
Trying to spot a liar isn’t easy, even for experts. Professor
Aldert Vrij, a social psychologist at the University of
Plymouth, has found that experienced liars are so aware of
the usual giveaway signs, such as
eyes, that they
avoid them.
Sometimes, however, the subconscious takes over.
American scientists reported this year that a liar’s nose gets
slightly bigger. When we lie, the heart pumps quicker,
changes that make the nose
bigger.
And if the thought of your nose swelling doesn’t make you
think twice, consider your health. Lying can eventually make
people ill. And it isn’t just the liars themselves who have
problems. As the saying goes: a thief will rob you, a
murderer will kill you, but you never know where you are
with a liar.

like they’re lying.
8 Why might people touch their nose when they lie?

Clean up
Over the past 100 years, soap has reflected how
consumer culture has developed. It was one of the
first mass-produced goods to be packaged. Its
manufacturers led the way in market research, and
the first TV ads were for soap. TV soap operas were
so named because they were often given money by
soap companies. Soap made men rich and one of the
world’s oldest and biggest multinationals, Unilever,
made its money from soap.
However, at the end of this month, the last bar of
soap will be produced by Unilever as the company
changes to other products. The bars have been
replaced by liquid soap, shower gels, and
bodywashes. In our search for hygiene, the bar of
soap is now not considered clean enough. Liquid
soap costs more, but soap is something on which we
seem happy to spend and spend. In the last four
years, the amount the British spend on soap products
has increased by 15%, to a total of £180m.
Nevertheless, our century-long love affair with soap
has reached an important stage. One part of the soap
market continues with its obsessive – and unwinnable
– fight against bacteria, persuading us to wash more
and more frequently. The other part is trying to take
us back to basics. This is the world of ‘natural’ soap,
which sells for the price of a bottle of decent wine. It
is handmade and packed with natural ingredients.
Part of its appeal lies in the idea of bringing us closer
to nature. And it looks like soap did in the 1860s,
bringing us back to where the mass consumption of
soap started.

Bee gets train to Britain
A new arrival from the
continent is creating excitement
among scientists – with its
colour combination of
orange, black, and white,
bombus hypnorum is the first
new species of bee identified in
Britain since the 19th centur y.
The insect is commonly found
throughout continental Europe. Now scientists say it is
in southern England, despite a decline in the
native British bee species.
Dave Goulson and Ben Dar vill of the University of
Southampton spotted the newcomer in a sur vey of insect
populations on the nor thern edge of the New Forest, in
the south of England.
How the bee got there from continental Europe
remains a myster y. Even at its narrowest, the distance
over the sea from France is 22 miles – a huge journey for
a bee.
Dr Goulson believes that rather than being blown
across the Channel in the wind, it hitched a ride on a
Channel tunnel train or a ferr y. ‘Creatures like butter flies
can travel long distances on the wind because they are
quite light and they’ve got big wings,’ he said. ‘A
bumblebee is heavy with small wings and needs to flap
them quite fast. It couldn’t do that for long enough to get
across the Channel.’
It has been suggested that as Britain’s climate
becomes warmer, increasing numbers of exotic insects
will arrive here. But the scientists don’t think that the bee
discovery is related to climate change. ‘Everyone
that it must be to do with global
warming, but I don’t think in this particular instance it is,’
said Dr Goulson. ‘This bee is found across the rest of
Europe right up to the Arctic circle in Norway – it is not a
species that is only found in warm climates. Why it has
not been here all along is a good question. It probably
simply never got here before the sea cut us off from
France 10,000 years ago.’
He is appealing for people to keep an eye out for the
bees in their gardens. News of sightings should be sent
to Dr Goulson at the School of Biological Sciences,
University of Southampton.
