BAND ON THE ROAD
Tom Nixon, of the band The Fudges, talks about the life of a
rock musician.
At the moment, we’re touring round Europe. I’m writing this on
our tour bus and we’re travelling from London to Amsterdam. I’m
listening to music. The other members of the band are sleeping
but I’m not feeling tired. I really like travelling and I’m feeling very
excited about tonight’s concert. Our guitar player, Henry, hates
travelling and he always wants to be at home. But I love it.
Life ‘on the road’ is different from our usual daily routine. We
travel every day and then we play a concert in the evening.
There are usually about 2,000–3,000 people in the audience,
and we sometimes play for 10,000 people. They always go mad
when they see us and they always sing the words to the songs.
It’s great! I like playing at big venues – it’s great being famous!
We usually start playing at 10pm and finish at 12pm. Then we
go back to our hotel and we always have a party after every
show. We go to bed very late and we get up late the next day.
We hardly ever get up before lunchtime. Then the bus comes
and we travel to the next city for the next concert. It’s got a TV
and a music system, so travelling is never boring.
It’s not all easy. I like going to new places but we see very little of
them – we only see our hotel and the concert hall. I don’t see my
friends and family for a long time. But I’m having a great time.
We’re selling lots of CDs and DVDs and we’re making a lot of
money. I’m doing what I really like doing – I’m singing with a very
successful rock band. So I’ve got a great life.
Question 1 Circle the correct answer.

Progress Test 3A
1
Five people (A–E) are talking about their jobs. Read
the texts then match the statements with the people.
A I studied History at university and then I got a job as a History
teacher in a secondary school. I liked the job but I didn’t like
getting there every day – the school was a long way from my
home and it took an hour and a half to get there. Last year I
moved to a local school and I like it very much. The students
work very hard. They do well in their exams and I find this
very rewarding. I’m not going to move to another school – I’m
happy now.
B After I left school I went to work at my father’s shop. He’s got
a shop that sells sports equipment. At first, I learned all about
the things we sell – I didn’t know anything about that when I
started. My father does his job very well and we have a lot of
customers. I’m going to be the manager one day, but at the
moment I’m learning the business.
C I worked in a restaurant for two years. I liked the work but I
didn’t like the restaurant manager. We were all scared of him
because he was horrible to people all the time. The strange
thing is, he was really nice when he wasn’t at work. Because
of him I left and now I work in another restaurant, where
everyone is very friendly.
D I had a job in a shop for two months but I did it very badly. I
was good with the customers but I was no good with the
money and I often gave people the wrong change. The
manager was very kind to me but it was clear that I couldn’t
do the job so I left. Now I’m working happily part-time in an
office. I’m learning to use computers and I’m doing well. I’m
going to work full-time next month so I can earn more money.
E When I left university, I worked for an organization that helps
people in poor countries. I didn’t earn a lot of money but the
work was very rewarding. After two years, I became a
manager at the organization and my job was very different. I
did lots of work on the computer and other things I didn’t
enjoy, and the work was very stressful. So I left and went to
work for another organization. I earned less than before but I
enjoyed the work.
I work for a member of my family.
1 I worked for someone who wasn’t very nice.
2 I left a job because I couldn’t do it well.
3 I’m going to stay in the job I have now.

7 I left a job because of the travelling.
8 I got more money but I didn’t enjoy my work.

… Bye, Mum!
Kate
Are you coming inside, Will? It’s going to rain.
Will
No, thanks.
Kate
What’s wrong?
Will
Mum’s got a new job – in Canada! Mum says we’re going
to move to Montreal.
Kate
Oh, no!
2 Amelia What’s happening, Kate?
Kate
I’m going to sell my old clothes and CDs on the internet.
I need some money. I want to give Will a goodbye party.
Amelia Great idea! Jack and I can help with the party.
Kate
Thanks, Amelia.
3 Kate
OK, so I’m going to buy sandwiches and crisps. And you’re
going to book a band, Amelia.
Amelia Yes, I am.
Kate
And Jack’s going to … make a cake. Are you sure, Jack?
Can you make cakes?
Jack
No, I can’t. My mum’s going to make the cake.
Kate
Good!
4 All
Surprise!
Will
Wow! … Thanks … but … what IS this?
Kate
It’s a goodbye party. For you!
Will
A goodbye party? Oh, no …
Kate
What’s wrong?
Will
We aren’t going to move – my mum isn’t going to take the
job!
Kate
Fantastic! Come on – let’s enjoy the party!
