Game of the Week

By Sergey Shipov

GM Shipov Analyzes the Game of
the Week, July 31-Aug 6

Change your style, the life loves bold
ones!

The games in this section are not from the super tournaments, most often. The case is that
we cover the super tournaments on line and, in order not to repeat ourselves I select the
games from some other competitions, usually the Swiss tournaments. However, this time it
is an exception. My colleagues and I appreciated the game between Bareev and Piket from
the recent tournament in Montecatini Terme. Eugene, usually cautious and reserved player,
performed a perfect chess masterpiece in combinational style. Judging by the interview he
gave after the tournament, he really intended to play the more liberated chess. I wish him
good luck; it will be more interesting for us, spectators, to watch him.
So, game of the week:

Bareev,E (2702) - Piket,J (2649) [A25]
Montecatini Terme (7), 03.08.2000

1.c4
Bareev has recently taken to the English opening. Obviously, it suites him in style.
1...e5 2.g3 Nc6 3.Bg2 g6 4.Nc3 Bg7 5.Rb1 f5 6.b4 Nf6 7.b5 Ne7 8.e3
A standard position for this opening. White moves his knight to e2, but not to f3, in order
not to close the way to the powerful g2-bishop. The plans of the adversaries are clear -
White advances on the queen-side, Black counterattacks in the center, and if possible, on
the kingside.
8...a6N
An interesting novelty. White demonstrates a similar play in one of the close lines of the
Sicilian Defense, where the pawn structure is very much alike, but the colors are opposite.
The a8-rook is anxious to get free! Before there arose 8...0–0
9.b6!
A worthy answer! White blocks the opponent’s queenside.
9...c6
After 9...cxb6 there followed not 10.Na4 b5! 11.cxb5 d5, but 10.Ba3 with a strong pressure
of white pieces.
10.d4 d6
Stronger is 10...e4 with a further d6-d5.
11.Nge2 Be6 12.Qb3 0–0
This is a serious mistake. By means of 12...d5! Black could get sufficient counterchances.
13.dxe5! dxe5 14.Na4 Nd7 15.0–0

White has a stable positional advantage due to the weakness of the black squares in the
opponent’s camp. In the long run White is going to capture the b7-pawn.
15...Qe8 16.Ba3 Qf7 17.Rbc1 Rad8 18.f4!
The White e2-knight is drawn into the game.
18...Rfe8 19.Bd6 exf4 20.Nxf4 Ne5 21.Nxe6 Qxe6 22.Rfd1 Nc8
In case of 22...Ng4 White could ignore the threat to the e3-pawn: 23.Nc5! Qxe3+ 24.Qxe3
Nxe3 25.Nxb7 Nxd1 26.Rxd1 and Black’s position is rather poor.
23.Nc5 Qf7
White to move. And how would you play?

Before 24.Nxb7!

24.Nxb7!
If you prefer this move- you are a true
romantic. Any realist, and Bareev has recently
been one of them, would prefer an obvious 24.
Bc7 Rxd1+ 25.Rxd1 Nxc4 26.Nxb7 with an
advantage as well.
24...Qxb7 25.Bc7
Now the door is shut behind the queen!
25...Rd7
He cannot exchange the knight for the
dangerous b6-pawn by 25...Rxd1+ 26.Rxd1
Nxb6, as after 27.c5+ Kh8 28.cxb6 another
pawn comes instead of the lost one!
26.Rxd7 Nxd7 27.c5+ Kh8 28.h3
That’s great! Somebody else would seek for a

way to win back material, while Bareev takes prophylactic measures as if nothing had
happened.
28...Nf6 29.Rd1 Ne7 30.Qe6 Qa8
After a natural 30...Ned5 31.Bxd5! Rxe6 32.Bxe6 Nd5 33.Rxd5! cxd5 the position that
could arose was absolutely fantastic!

Before 34.Bd7 (line)

White has but a bishop for the queen, but he
wins by 34.Bd7 Bh6 35.c6 Bxe3+ 36.Kg2
Qxb6 37.Be5+! Kg8 38.c7!
31.Rb1 Qb7 32.Bf4 h6
After 32...Ned5 there followed a queen
sacrifice once again - 33.Bxd5 Rxe6 34.Bxe6
and White wins in view of Be6-c8 that cannot
be repelled!
33.Rd1 g5 34.Bc7 Qa8 35.Rb1 Qb7 36.Rd1
Qa8 37.Rd6!
A decisive intrusion!
37...f4 38.Qf7 Nf5 39.Rxf6 fxe3 40.Re6
A brilliant creative achievement of the
Moscow GM!
1–0

Two other nominees are the games from the British championship, which finished few
days before. Hebden and Hodgson are well known in the chess community for their creative
approach. They like to create tactical complications on the board and they invent something
new in the opening very often. I hope, I shall not spoil with my compliments their chess
luck and they shall obtain high places in the resulting crosstable.

Summerscale,A (2459) - Hebden,M (2505) [E99]
BCF-ch Millfield (5.1), 04.08.2000

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0–0 6.Be2 e5 7.0–0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7
A classical variation of the King’s Indian defense. White attacks on the Q-side, while Black
do the same on the K-side. 9.Ne1
Nowadays more popular is the line with 9.b4
9...Nd7 10.Be3 f5 11.f3 f4 12.Bf2 g5 13.a4 a6
In his young years, Mark used to play 13...Rf7
14.a5 Rf6 15.Na4 Rh6 16.c5N
A novelty, which is highly logical and consistent. White tries to get hold of the b6-point as
quickly as possible. Previously happened 16.Nd3 Nf6 17.Be1 g4 18.fxg4 Nxe4 19.Qc2 Ng6
20.Nc3 Ng5 21.Nf2 Nh4 22.Nfe4 Nxe4 23.Nxe4 and White obtained an advantage in the
game Hjartarson,J-Shaked,T/New York 1996/1–0 (58). However, Black can play stronger:
for example, he can transfer his queen to h5, as Hebden does.
16...Qe8! 17.Kh1 Qh5
Black has created real mating threats to the white king in the most effective way.
18.Bg1 Nf6
It is not in Black’s favor to capture the c5-pawn, because after 18...Nxc5 19.Nxc5 dxc5 20.
Rc1 bad is 20...b6? due to 21.axb6 cxb6 22.d6 next the double attack from d5, winning the
rook.
19.Nd3?
White underestimates Black’s attack. Stronger is 19.cxd6 cxd6 20.Nb6 which the cunning
Mark definitely prepared to meet with 20...Qh4! (bad is 20...Rb8 21.Rc1) with the threat of
Nf6-h5-g3 checkmate!
Nevertheless, I think that, by precise play, White can defend himself and retain his extra
material. For example: 21.g3! (in the case of 21.g4 Bxg4 22.fxg4 (22.Ng2 Qh3 23.Nxa8
Nh5) 22...Nxe4 23.Ra3 Rf8 it is more difficult for White to defend) 21...fxg3 (21...Qh3? 22.
g4! Bxg4 23.fxg4 Nxe4 24.Ra3+-) 22.Ng2 (22.Nxa8 Bh3!) 22...Qh5 23.Nxa8 Bh3 24.Ne3
and it is not clear, how will Black proceed with the attack.

Before 19...Nfxd5!

19...Nfxd5!
Brilliant strike! By sacrificing one of his
knights, black attaches to attack another one.
20.Qb3
After 20.exd5 Nf5 , in the view of the mating
threat on g3, White has to play: 21.g4 , but it
also does not help him to save himself: 21...
fxg3 22.Qd2 Qh3 23.Qxg5 gxh2 24.Bf2 Rg6
20...Kh8 21.cxd6 cxd6 22.Nb6
After 22.Qc4 strong is 22...Be6!; and after 22.
Rfc1 - 22...Ne3 23.Nb6 Be6 24.Qc3 Rf8
22...Nxb6 23.Qxb6 Qe8
White is through at the cost of the pawn.
24.Nb4

Perhaps, he would obtain more rescue chances

after 24.Rac1 d5 25.Qc7 dxe4 (Black cannot advance his d-pawn to d4 in time, because his
e5-pawn is under attack) 26.fxe4 Rc6 27.Rxc6 Nxc6 28.Rd1
24...d5 25.Qc7 d4
Black’s protected passed d4-pawn is the guarantor of his win.
26.Rfc1 Bd7 27.Nd5 [Of course, not 27.Qxb7? Rb8] 27...Nxd5 28.exd5 Rb8 29.Bd3 Bf8
30.Be4 Bd6 31.Qb6 Qd8 32.Qb3 g4!
Having repelled the white queen, Black can proceed with the attack.
33.fxg4 Bxg4 34.Rc2 Qg5 35.Rac1 Bf5 36.Qd3 Rf8 37.Re1 Rhf6 38.Bf2

Before 38...f3!

38…f3!
The decisive breakthrough!
39.gxf3 Bxe4 40.Qxe4 Rf4 41.Rg1 Qh5 42.
Qe2 Qxf3+ 43.Qxf3 Rxf3 44.Bg3 d3 45.Rc3
h5 46.Kg2 h4 47.Bxh4 e4 48.Rd1 Rg8+ 49.
Kh1 e3! 50.Rcxd3 e2!
A perfect game!
0–1

Knott,S (2381) - Hodgson,J (2640) [A10]
BCF-ch Millfield (7.5), 07.08.2000

1.c4 b6 2.Nc3
White already has to play cautiously. 2.d4?! is

followed by 2...e6! and, according to Svetlana Matveeva, Black is already slightly better!
But I don’t believe her!
2...Bb7 3.e4 e6 4.Nf3 Bb4 5.Qb3 Na6 6.Be2 Ne7
A tricky English opening: Black initially develops only his pieces, reserving actions with
his pawns - depending on what his opponent does.
7.0–0 0–0 8.d3 Ng6 9.a3 Nc5!N
An elegant novelty! After 9...Bd6 10.d4 c5 11.Qd1 Qb8 12.d5 Re8 13.Bd3 Bf4 14.Bxf4
Qxf4 15.Nb5 Qb8 16.h4 White obtained serious advantage, Uhlmann,W-Bagirov,V/
Gladenbach 1999/ 1–0 (37)
10.Qc2
Of course, White is not obliged to give away his queen by 10.Qxb4? a5 11.Qb5 Bc6
10...Bxc3 11.Qxc3 a5 12.Be3
Strong seems 12.b3!? , and after 12...a4 13.b4 Nb3 White avoids trading off his c1–bishop
by 14.Bb2! with the threat of checkmate on g7.
12...a4!
Fixing White’s Q-side.
13.Nd2 f5!
Programmed advance. Black is going to attack White’s K-side.
14.exf5 Nh4 15.f3 Nxf5 16.d4 Qf6!
The play in such openings is based on such tactical intermediate moves.
17.Bf2 Na6 18.Ne4 Qh6 19.d5?!
A rather dubious decision. White lets the black a6-knight return into play. I prefer 19.Rad1
19...d6 20.dxe6 Rae8 21.Bd3 Rxe6 22.Qc1
More natural is 22.Rae1
22...Qh5!
Provocation! GM offers his opponent a piece!

After 22...Qh5!

23.g4?
White yields to temptation.... More consistent
and reliable is 23.Qg5
23...Rg6! 24.Bg3? ...and loses resignedly! He
could sustain the tension by an effective 24.c5!
Nxc5 25.Nxc5 , expecting for 25...bxc5 26.Qc4
+ Kh8 27.Bg3!, but Black could play stronger
- 25...Bxf3!, with the strongest attack against
the white king.
24...Nxg3 25.hxg3 [25.gxh5 Ne2+] 25...Qh3
26.Qc2
After 26.Qe1 the strongest is 26...Nc5 27.
Nxc5 Bxf3, winning.
26...Nc5! 27.Nxc5 Rxg4!
Final chord! The white king perishes.

28.Bxh7+ Kh8 0–1
