Problem
Service is aware that some GSM V220 phone has intermittent or no display when
power-up. The root cause is the flex cable assembly supplied by MFS, damage, bad
solder on pin, and open solder joint. This is happened due to the following:
1. Unbalance push strength applied on the connector.
2. Bad and or poor solder on connector pin.
3. Poor rework skill of the operator.
4. Shifting during machine placement.

Solution:
The supplier has improved there manufacturing process,
implemented the corrective
action on 8/5/05 to the following station:
Production Line:
1. Study the reflow process
2. Fine tune placement machine if three components are misalign.
3. Train and recertified the operator.
QA station
1. Check and inspect the soldering pad for any contamination.
2. Train the operator to use the correct method on how to apply balance stress on
the connector.
3. Operator performs 100% inspection of the connector using 30X microscope.
Service Action
Customer Returns:
When servicing any GSM V220 customer returns with a display complaint
“no/intermittent display” then verify the complaint.
1. If the unit has a flex cable, assembly
problem check and or replace it with a good
flex cable assembly.
2. If the unit has, a good flex cable assembly then proceeds with normal
troubleshooting as per the customer complaint.
Service Inventory:
Before replacing any flex cable assembly manufactured before date code 8/5/05, make
sure to inspect for damage, bad solder and open solder joint.
Call Center Action:
When responding to customer inquires on the GSM V220 product with customer
complaints “No/Intermittent Display”, please direct the customer to have their phone
serviced at an authorized Motorola Service Center.
