1. Introduction!
!
During the decade of the 1970’s, the first ‘serious’ scholar papers on sports and culture
were written. It is key to understand that a sporting event has not always been seen as
worthy of research (Wanta, 2013, Boyle, 2103), it has mostly been seen on the same level
as award shows, popular music and blockbuster movies, all subjects we now know are
studied all around the world and the impact these events have in our lives. However, in the
words of Boyle (2013: 89) sport matters in this day and age, because it can generate
enough content and media to drive business models, to create advertising campaigns
around it, to attract sponsors and to put it simply, because it generates money. Sports
have become a big part of our everyday life, and they even have the power to disrupt the
dailyness and be considered media events. !
!
We’ve come a long way from the debate of sports being considered low culture and not
worthy of study to them being front page news whenever some big event occurs and
having athletes at the centre of an advertising campaign as is the case of Mo Farah and
the Virgin Media campaign (
http://www.mccgp.co.uk)
which has the extra benefit of
generating some sense of nationalism and patriotism. Having this in mind, I will attempt to
address why that perception of sports changed, give a brief distinction on why studying
sports matters and how we got to the point where it is normal to do a research proposal on
them. !
!
I decided to choose the sports journalist as I believe is one of the professions that has
implemented Twitter in their daily life and gives it one of the best uses; Twitter being
perfect for live events narration and live updates. This I believe, is one of the reasons to
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 4
understanding why are journalists so important in this discussion of new media and
journalism.!
!
All of this will be furthered explained in my literature review which is broken down into four
key sections. The first one being Media Events which will explain what are media events,
the impact they have on society and the media industry focusing on that strong ‘sense’ of
national bond they can have, with examples in sports for my specific case, but also
focusing on something as diverse and different to sport as was the funeral of Princess
Diana which Couldry (1999) would go on and to analyse and explain the power a media
event on television can create. Starting with media events will help me put the reader into
context on the importance of a media event, its impacts on our lives, and give specific
examples of sporting events which will be my second chapter. !
!
The chapter on sporting events will start with a very short history on the very first scholar
papers on sports and their role in our culture and how at the beginning it was even
complicated to label these events (Real, 2013). Starting with the Super Bowl in the 1970’s,
everything changed and we’ll see the impact sporting events have on today’s modern
society and start mentioning key aspects of the relationship between journalism and sports
that goes a long way back. Sport journalists are the focus of my dissertation as they are
the ones I want to research about, how they have dealt with the changes new media have
brought upon their profession and their adaptations, so we’ll see a brief description of the
new and improved sport journalist of the 21st century and understand their new profile and
skills using the new technologies, talking about their role today and how their job changed
will be the bridge to the next chapter in the dissertation which has to deal with new media.!
Today, there is a new journalist, the “always on” journalist, and this has happened thanks
to new technologies and devices amongst other reasons. I’ll start this chapter by defining
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 5
what is new media and then go on to provide examples of how it’s being embraced by
some and how some believe they shouldn’t even bother with it. I will then proceed to talk
about some traditional journalists who sadly lost their jobs after their refusal to embrace
new technologies. I intend on showing how a digital revolution has happened and some
people failed to noticed it, digging deep on the repercussions this has had on the
profession and how it has made it much more responsive now (Davis, 2010). Finally, I will
end the chapter writing about the ‘citizen journalist’, having in mind how new media and
specifically social media has created a new type of journalism in which citizens seem to
have a part to play. !
Then, from new media, I will go to my last literature review chapter which has to do with
Twitter, the other main pillar in my research question after sports and journalism. Social
media is rising steadily as time goes by, Twitter being of my specific interest. A social
networking service, describing itself as a micro-blogging site which currently has more
than 200 million active users. Why are sports journalists adopting it? How are they using
it? These, amongst other questions are on my mind and with the aid of the uses and
gratification theory used by Hambrick et al (2010) some answers to this questions might be
suggested.!
!
So it is this relationship sport journalists have with Twitter I’m interested in analysing,
seeing as traditional media is still alive, yet there are more and more ‘new’ media
journalists everyday, their lives have been given a 180° turn as well as engaging them in a
daily conversation with their audience. Thus, by looking at sports as media events,
journalism and the transition from old media to new media as well as the adoption of
Twitter and their daily use of it, Intend on taking a look at How is Twitter transforming the
practice of sports journalism, and how are the journalists coping with this transformation?!
!
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 6
My research and methods will consist of a questionnaire answered by sports journalists
and some Twitter content analysis. I will ask various journalists on their current daily habits
on the job, how has it changed, and mainly how important is Twitter in their journalistic
practice. I hope to get journalists from a diverse range of sports, going from football to ice
hockey, as this will help me understand how diverse are the effects of Twitter in sports
journalism and their importance. Additionally, I will analyse some tweets from selected
journalists to see what they write about and mostly, how often and with what intentions; for
breaking news or for promoting their own work, this way, gathering information of their
online habits which will help me understand their use of Twitter. !
!
I will then present my findings in a chapter called Results, and analyse them in my
Discussion chapter where I will bring back all my work from the literature review to
compare and analyse with the findings. I will discuss the key findings and generate some
conclusions which will be presented in my final chapter, the conclusion, with a brief
summary of the whole dissertation.

2. Literature Review!
!
To understand how Twitter has changed sports journalism, first I will define some concepts
and put the reader into context. I’ll write about media events and their importance which
will serve as a basis for sporting events and the relationship with journalism. From here, I’ll
go on to write about new media and the changes it’s bringing to the journalism world in
general, focusing on Twitter as the tool of choice for sports journalism. Most of the
literature I used as basis is recent from sports & communication journals as I thought it
would be appropriate to write about the changes in sports communications with the help of
recent studies and up to date theories instead of old texts, although that doesn’t mean
some classic studies won’t be of use.!
!
Media Events!
!
Mediation produces new meanings, it (Silverstone, 1999: 13) involves movement of
meanings and it is a constant change, constant transformation of meanings that can go
from anything like texts or even from one event to another. Having this in mind, we can
consider a media event, as an event that has been transformed, it has gained a new
meaning, a new magnitude thanks to the media. !
!
If we take into consideration the funerals of John F. Kennedy or Princess Diana, the
London 2012 Olympics or even the September 11 attacks, all different events and on
different decades but with one main similarity; they were all media events. Events that in
the words of Dayan and Katz (1992:1), have given shape to a completely new and
different form of narrative genre which demands complete attention of the viewers, and
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 8
always aiding itself with the use of electronic media to command the audience’s attention.
The viewers will always recognise this ‘invite’ from the media to the event, in fact, they
“even [see it as] a command to stop their daily routine and join in a holiday
experience” (Ibid, 1992: 1). Comparing the viewing of a media event to a holiday is
something not out of the ordinary, main reason being that these events are precisely not
ordinary, they are rare occurrences, large scale media narratives that even bear a strong
sense of social or national bond. Rothenbulher (2010) also views them as something of a
special ceremony, a celebration out of the ordinary. He goes on to describe them as !
!
!
Large events that interrupt the normal broadcasting schedule, receiving special !
coverage and special attention... [they] function as ritual celebrations, as special !
time-outs from the normal for attention to the ceremonial (Rothenbulher, 2010: 34)!
!
In the early 20th century, radio was the main medium for the broadcasting of media events
but after television became mainstream, it’s been the main medium. A broadcast like
Princess Diana’s funeral or JFK’s funeral, the London 2012 Olympics, or sometimes
unplanned mediated events like for example the September 11 attacks, natural disasters
or political scandals are ceremonial rituals; “unexpected, ‘occasional things’ that ‘show up’
as eventful ‘against a background of uneventful everyday existence’ (Moores, 2004:24)”.!
!
As you can see, the main and most predominant characteristic every author insists on is
the interruption of the normal, the ordinary, the routine. Reinforcing that idea of something
out of the ordinary, not formulaic is key to understanding media events. Now it’s common
for journalists to look for media events, breaking news gets the attention, breaks routines,
and everyone wants to be a part of it, even the audience in the scene who depending on
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 9
the event, will always react to the camera, in a way, “cause[ing] the characters who
participate in the event stage themselves for television” (Rath, 1991: 84). !
!
One example of the power of television, and most importantly, the effects a media event
can create on people, is the previously mentioned Princess Diana’s funeral. Couldry
(1999: 85) recollects some testimonies from people who attended the funeral and this is
one excerpt:!
!
!
As one person who went to camp along the funeral route put it: ‘I kept looking at the
!
TV reports and saying to myself, “Why are you looking at this?’ You should be there.
!
So I came.’ People drawn to the televised lying-in-state of President Kennedy 34
!
years before had spoken in similar terms: ‘The more we watch[ed], the more we felt
!
we just had to be there ourselves.’Not only did the whole week of mourning qualify
!
as a ‘media event’ in Dayan and Katz’ term, but the centers of mourning were, in a
!
sense, media sites. By ‘being there’, you could cross over (temporarily) into the !
media narrative itself. (Couldry, 1999: 85).!
!
Some people who were sitting comfortable in their homes, suddenly felt the need to leave
that zone of comfort and attend the funeral. A mood, sense of mourning took them over
and they actually felt love for someone they didn’t even know. Media events can create
those type of powerful emotions, and as previously mentioned above, they can create a
sense of nationalism, of bonding between the people. And in this regard, I believe sports
excel more than almost anything else.!
!
In the home viewing of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Rothenbulher (1988) found out
that the viewing of the event was ceremonial. People who actually sat in front of the
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 10
television to follow key moments like the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony and
every final of major events, did it with those loved and close ones, the same people with
whom they spend a holiday like thanksgiving. This is a clear example of how media events
not only change our routine, but also create bonding and even nationalism while watching
your country compete in the Olympics.!
!
Another example, is given by Boyle and Monteiro (2005: 227) during the Euro 2004 in
Portugal. After the national team won its first match in the competition, the streets were
filled with people, flags waving all around the country, face painted fans danced until the
early morning in the streets with their flags and that was just winning a group stage match.
People forgot about all their troubles for a night and rushed to the streets to celebrate,
spread joy and happiness with their fellow countrymen. After these brief examples of
sporting events, I want to finish with this quote of Alabarces et al. (2001: 549) found in
Boyle and Monteiro (2005) ‘sports events can fuel, however transiently, a sense of
harmony and unity, creating, albeit fleetingly, a homogenizing effect’ (Boyle and Monteiro,
2005: 239). The power of the media has been well documented now, but it wasn’t always
like that, specially for sporting events, a subject looked down upon and not worthy of
research for a long time even though as I’ve written, they can create great emotions in
people.!
!
Sporting Events and Journalism !
!
There was a time in which it wasn’t that clear how to define sports. Real (2013:5), writes
how classifying sports generated a debate, there were many ways of defining the subject
and people couldn't agree on what they should be considered to be. Some said they were
a ‘mythic ritual’, some said they were a phenomenon, others, called it ‘mega events’, but
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 11
most would classify them as just a ‘game’. As I showed in the previous chapter, today their
importance and repercussions in our life as media events are huge. Sports play a pretty
important part in our everyday life and cultural life. As Whannel (2002: 3) points out, in
England, events such as Wimbledon, The Derby, The Boat Race or a Football Cup are
considered rituals, and the broadcast of these ‘rituals’ are a significant part of the nation’s
cultural history, as well as contributing to a sense of national identity, a sense of
‘Englishness’. I closed the previous chapter with an example of this feeling occurring in
Portugal during the European Football Cup in 2004, now I want to go back a little further in
time, and give a brief history of the first big sporting event that got the scholars attention.!
!
It was in the 1970’s in America when scholars and researchers (Real, 1975) started
noticing that some sporting events were not just an event but a spectacle with massive
repercussion across various industries. The big event that changed it all was the Super
Bowl, which at that time was already the most watched event on television in America,
people gathering in their homes, restaurants, public spaces and all across the country to
watch the big game, buying food and drinks and making the whole situation sort of a ritual.
“Advertisers spent more money per second ($200,000–$240,000 for 60 seconds in 1974
dollars) to access those attentive eyeballs than they spent for any other event” (Real,
2013:2). Today, that number shoots itself up to almost $4 million dollars per 30 second
spot (
http://bleacherreport.com
/). The Super Bowl basically ceases to be just an American
Football game and becomes a media event that attracts sponsors, advertisers and
complete business strategies are built around it. After Thanksgiving, the Super Bowl is the
most food consumption weekend in America and the biggest tourism weekend in Las
Vegas (Real, 2013:6). It is much more than a game, a spectacle with millions of people
involved in a ceremoniously prepared event that bonds friends and families together.!
!
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 12
Fast forward to 2013, thousands of sporting events happen every year, events that make a
whole country stop and demand the people’s attention. Planned events that even though
Dayan and Katz (1992:6) would go on and say “are not organised by the broadcasters
even if they are planned with television “in mind”. The media are asked, or ask, to join”, I
have to disagree with that statement as in most cases, the broadcasters are directly
involved in the planning of the event, multi camera set ups are required and a whole show
is put on just for the people watching from home on their TV sets, one example being the
2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, an event clearly designed for television and
with their help. Today, with the rise of social media, broadcasters are even incorporating
specific themed hashtags “#” to promote the show or event and make it trend in social
networks such as Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. Currently, sporting events are carefully
planned, enormously popular events that corporations see as a huge advertising window,
a big business opportunity. !
!
Sports (Boyle, 2006:3) have become a globalised event and there is no doubt about their
importance in this mediated age. Sports and media, specially television and now digital
media helped propel huge events like the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games to another
level and it is in this mediated process that journalism played an important part. When
speaking about the royal wedding, Dayan and Katz said the following: “journalists become
priest... full members of the wedding, equals of the principal actors”. (1992: 193).
Journalists would get priority access, they would be allowed backstage and get all the
information necessary to report on the event. These applies to more than weddings, it also
applies to every major sporting event which is presented with such a ceremoniously
manner that even journalists try to change their critical stance, and in a way, become part
of the event; they are an important link between what is being broadcasted and the main
actors in the event. !
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 13
!
Journalism has played an important part in making sporting become an integral part of our
culture and it has been really close to sports throughout history, a clear example comes
from Boyle who writes: !
!
!
Journalists have always been important cultural intermediaries between sports and
!
society. When early 20th-century-boxing promoters arranged events, journalists !
were a key part in promoting and selling the event in a pre-television age. Sports !
journalists were also the myth makers of sport as they embellished the on-field ! abilities of
sports stars and ignored any of the off-field activities of these stars that ! might besmirch
the carefully constructed perception of sporting icons among the ! wider public (Boyle,
2013: 92)!
!
Yet, just as with sports were not being deemed important enough decades ago for
scholarly research, sports journalists suffered from snobbery and were under appreciated
it too by their own peers. Boyle (2006:1) says that historically, in the hierarchy of
professional journalism, sports journalism has been seen as the ‘toy department’ and
being described as sloppy and soft news. He goes on to elaborate (Ibid:12) how for many
scholars, sports journalism is not even seen as journalism and people have even grouped
it with lifestyle and entertainment news, just like sporting events where grouped with award
shows.!
!
A reason why sports journalist might be looked down upon is because of the way they
report which is certainly different. Wanta (2013: 82) argues that sports reporters often have
to cover a specific team and thus become really close to some of the employees and even
the athletes to get the information, just like previously mentioned with the wedding
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 14
example, sports journalist sometimes become one more member of a team getting inside
information with the condition to report only positive aspects thus losing any objectiveness
in the process. Today it is normal for some journalist to even exchange tweets with famous
athletes, or even sometimes appear on commercials with them as the SportsCenter
commercials with athletes (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfI8EjoBJYU
). Moreover, as
almost every source they use comes from the sporting world, they are isolated, Rowe
(2007: 400-401) explains how they tend to be drawn from the same close circuit, athletes,
celebrities, coaches and employees of the sporting clubs, thus isolating their jobs from the
world beyond sport. For these reasons, we ca see how their job is really different from the
other areas in journalism, but being different doesn’t mean unimportant.!
!
If years ago journalist were intermediaries between sports and societies and bonded with
players, today that is even more clear as they have to stay in touch with their sources 24/7
as mentioned above; they are “always on” and their profession evolved so much over the
past years with the help of technology that now journalist have to “cover a sport... be a
blogger, a tweeter, and be able to file (or upload) copy for a range of platforms (print,
online, mobile)” (Boyle, 2013: 92-93). They have to be everywhere, all the time, but most
importantly, they have to be fast, because in the new media world, with social media and
the smartphone rise amongst other reasons, news travel fast, instantaneity is common and
breaking the exclusive is almost impossible. A technological revolution has happened that
changed the way journalist do their work.!
!
While analysing the use of social media during the 2010 UK general election, Nic Newman
argued that: !
!
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 15
!
Even veteran journalists have been surprised at how social and digital media !
continues to change the way journalism is practiced; the growth and success of !live !
blogging, the adoption of micro-blogging, the shortening of the news cycle and the !
growth of real-time conversation between political and media elites. More journalists ! are
recognizing that social media are not just something for the web team, but are ! relevant to
every member of the newsroom. (In Boyle, 2013: 94)!
!
Even though these comments were made about political journalism, they are totally
applicable to sports journalism. As Boyle (2006, 142) states, “sports journalism in the
digital age is, of course characterized by continuity and change”, they interact with athletes
or media elites and they also interact with the fans. The audience access to televised
media and the vast range of information on the internet, have in my opinion complicated
the journalist job. When people can report and sometimes with more detail than you, what
makes a journalist worth following on Twitter, or reading his report two hours after the
event? On this, I plan to elaborate more on the next two chapters, arguing how digital
media have forced journalists to raise their game, step it up and now they need to stand
out to make the audience keep reading them and stay relevant. !
!
New Media and Journalism!
!
To understand how the journalism world has been turned upside down by the emerging
technologies, we have to talk about what new media is as well as the new technologies I
mention. Peters says that “new media are media we do not yet know how to talk about’.
They are uncertain objects, their terms are unclear; their use, purpose and impact are not
yet fully understood” (Peters, 2009:18). In other words, everything that is emerging in
today’s world that people, enterprises, universities and others are embracing, media that is
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 16
cutting edge and showing promise of being here to stay, yet we don’t fully understand it,
we are still trying to figure out what impact if any, they will have in our fully established
world. For journalists, Twitter is still one technology that in my opinion is clearly new media
as some of them use it, some don’t, but there is still no general consensus of why or how
to use it, or even if you should bother at all with it. Earlier this year, Sky News
(
www.guardian.co.uk
) gave their employees some new guidelines on how to behave on
Twitter and those new rules forbid them on retweeting anything posted by anyone other
than a Sky News journalist and abstaining themselves from posting personal stuff, a move
seen to most as a step backwards in their social media usage.!
!
The fact is new media has brought some changes to journalism and now I’ll write about
some of these changes, starting by how some traditional journalist have lost their jobs for
failing to embrace new technologies and also go over how the way news are delivered and
who delivers them has also changed. !
!
Twitter is one of these new technologies and the focus of my study. A service that has
given people, not only journalist but casual users, the ability to extend our communications
because now everyone can post something from their mobile phone, break news without
even being in a studio and more importantly, allowing for replies and participation. Davis
(2010:123) notes how the internet in general made traditional journalism much more
responsive, something that can easily be applied to Twitter and social media in general, he
goes on to explain how the existence of blogs and social media have allowed the casual
user, the general public to have participation in the conversation and thus creating what is
being referred to as ‘citizen journalists’. So public participation is something that’s growing
and having effects and repercussions which include having a constant and public
engagement with journalists, celebrities and even politicians. This is the way forward
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 17
according to him, news being produced much quicker, transmitted from anywhere in the
world just from a device that fits in the palm of your hand, fewer resources, human
resources are needed now to deliver the news and that’s just one simple way in which the
journalism world has been turned upside down. When asked about the internet and work,
a journalist said the following: “In terms of research, particularly when you are away from
the office, it is phenomenal. As is the instant access to material, including your own library,
so you can search previous stuff you have written”. (Boyle, 2006: 136). The journalists
elaborates how it saves time by allowing to find out about athletes or celebrities publicists,
or even their lawyers’ numbers on the web. This is a great example of someone
incorporating new media in their own working habits in an useful manner. But not everyone
has adapted so easily to new media.!
!
While in the 20th century print journalists dominated, the industry has been transformed
with the arrival of this digital revolution that now the traditional is not enough. Usher (2010)
did some research on some ‘old way’ or traditional journalist who were forced to resign,
accept a buyout or in some cases, were just fired from their journals and analysed their
goodbye letters and last posts on the journals to try and find some explanation on why
they couldn’t keep up with the changes, why were they let go? The findings are pretty
remarkable.!
!
The main finding, was in their vocabulary, they clearly lacked one to talk about what new
media means and the repercussions it’s having in their jobs, they couldn’t understand how
it’s clearly transforming their profession. Not only that, but they were stuck in the past and
even though it’s hard to say what the future of traditional journalism will look like in a few
years, the fact that they couldn’t even bother to learn and try to understand what was
going on with new technologies and new media doesn’t leave them with much to bargain
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 18
for today. A clear example is Dennis McCann’s final blog post which Usher (2010:922)
takes from the writer’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.!
!
!
Today, a reporter can write a deadline story on an iPod and have it in a reader’s !
hand – or ear – before the events involved even happened. Or something like that. !
!
I don’t fully understand. But clearly the way that information is passed along has
!
changed, and we are struggling to change with it. (McCann, 2007 in Usher 2010:
!
922)!
!
Digital technology, according to Boyle (2013: 95 ) changed completely some aspects in the
traditional association between the journalist, the media, and the audience, while also
making the flow of information transnational and immediate. A revolution happened and
some didn’t even noticed, or when they did, it was too late. The citizen journalist has been
born where anyone can break news, question them and in some ways, anyone can be a
reporter. We are all participants now. We can all contribute now and so the news have
become more of a conversation, they are open to questioning and as mentioned above,
everyone can create content. This is what some traditional journalist failed to comprehend,
new media helped to shift the dynamic of what being a journalist meant, now as Usher
states, “being a professional journalist is no longer about winning awards or directing the
conversation” (2010: 921). Engin Onder founded a ‘citizen journalist’ group in Turkey
called 140 Journals (A nod to Twitter’s 140 character limit), an organisation filled with
volunteers who use their mobile devices to report the news in a country with big
censorship. “We are all journalists now,” Onder explained. “What we have is our own
devices… it actually removes the barriers between the person who sees the news and
who creates the news” (Dlugoleski, 2013). At the time of writing, their Twitter account has
more than 30,000 followers. The old way is in danger of ceasing to exists, the future is
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 19
uncertain for some journalists who fail to acknowledge that the public today is more than
just a recipient of information and more of a contributor. !
!
To close this segment on new media, I would like to use the words of Kevin McCarra, Chief
Football Correspondent for The Guardian newspaper while he was working on the 2010
FIFA World Cup in South Africa to also exemplify how this relationship of the journalist and
recipient has changed. He argued:!
!
!
I believe that it is in football that the relationship between writer and reader has most
changed, particularly since those roles are no longer fixed. Access to the internet, I
am glad to say, has done away entirely with the silly assumption that journalists have
access to a higher knowledge. Countless websites cover all aspects of football in
virtually every nation. If any player at a World Cup is an unknown quantity it will be
purely because the research has not been carried out with sufficient thoroughness.
Websites, whether statistical, solemn, esoteric or comic, disseminate limitless
quantities of information about even the most obscure footballers and managers. The
press fool themselves if they suppose for an instant that they can be a priesthood
who own a sacred knowledge. (McCarra, 2010)!
!
It seems that anyone can be a journalist or at least attempt to be one; a new type of
journalists exists now, and the way traditional journalism is practiced is changing.
Information flows constantly and the web is so vast that you can find almost anything in
just a few clicks. Some journalists are embracing it like McCarra and furthermore,
sometimes it’s not a conversation with a fan that will happen, but also the athletes might
engage in a conversation with a journalist and this is something that happens often in
social media as we will see later on. New media is quickly becoming the standard, it has
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 20
completely shifted the way journalism is conducted and how news are delivered, “the key
objective for journalists and news executives is to understand and adapt to technological
change” said Jones and Salter (2012: vii), as we saw in this chapter, some couldn’t
understand that and failed to adapt while others do it flawlessly, on this I will elaborate in
the next chapter.!
!
Twitter and Journalism!
!
News consumption for sports fans has changed from traditional news outlets as television
or printed newspapers to digital resources; mobile applications, blogs and social media are
at the centre of it all now (Kian, Burden, & Shaw, 2011; Sanderson, 2011 in Hambrick and
Sanderson, 2012: 385). Furthermore, (Wanta 2013, 84) the rapid growth of social media
services has led to some structural changes in news gathering routines for some reporters
and completely changed the dynamic in athletes, fans and sports journalists relationships.!
!
These changes are fundamentally enhanced by Twitter. Mediated sports play a large role
in fan identification and bondings as explained previously, and they allow for fans to gather
around their favourite team supporting it while also talking about their favourite players and
discussing their team. Twitter allows for direct communication between fans and athletes
so as Schultz and Sheffer (2010: 230) say, the connection between Twitter and sports
media is obvious. Twitter can be described as a microblogging site that allows users to
send messages with a length of no more than 140 characters. Each message is called a
‘tweet’ which is transmitted to every follower that person has, users are free to follow who
they want and they can reply to tweets or retransmit them (retweet). As some researchers
(Hambrick et al. 2010; Kassing & Sanderson, 2010; Schultz & Sheffer, 2010) have
observed, Twitter has become the social media service of choice for reporters as well as
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 21
athletes. So why are they using it so much, what changes if any is it having in their
routines? Schultz and Sheffer (2010: 229) rightfully point out that even though a tool
limited to 140 characters seems very restricting, endless possibilities have emerged and
one of those has been breaking the news.!
!
News breaking has grown to the point where it’s immediate (Hambrick and Sanderson,
2012: 392). News are being reported now on official Twitter accounts from the aspiring up
and comer journalist, up to the big news media outlets even though some organisations
like Sky decide to go against the new ‘norm’ forbidding their journalists to break news
without permission. (
http://www.techdirt.com
). Skepticism has loomed over social media
since its introduction to the world, questioning its real use in news. Back in 2008 (Jones
and Salter, 2012: 3), The Independent criticised the BBC’s use of Twitter when reporting a
massacre in Mumbai, saying that now anybody with a Twitter account could have a ‘crack’
at journalism and stating that Twitter was not the way to provide news. Today, they use
Twitter and other social media services while reporting news. One thing important to take
from this is the phrase about anyone having a ‘crack’ at journalism, as I’ve shown in a
previous chapter, some are actually doing it with moderate success and furthermore, today
sports media outlets and organisations have more competitors in the form of the athletes,
who can now sometimes break the news themselves. (Sanderson & Kassing, 2011 in
Hambrick and Sanderson, 2012: 385) One famous case was Eden Hazard, a now Chelsea
FC player who announced he was joining them by tweeting it (
www.mirror.co.uk
). This has
caused a big changed in the way news reporting and communication in general occurs.
Now athletes connect directly with their fans skipping public relations departments
(Hambrick et al, 2010: 454). Another example is Lance Armstrong who used Twitter to
announce his second retirement from professional cycling. These actions have propelled a
new phenomenon in news reporting as it is now common for news outlets to quote a tweet,
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 22
and use it as a source. Hambrick et al (2010: 455) point out how VeloNews quoted
Armstrong’s tweets as an information source and Cohen (2009) goes further showing how
even The New York Times and CNN cite tweets in their articles as credible information
sources. But the real strength of Twitter doesn’t only rely in who can break the news, but
on how fast and easy they can propagate. Twitter users spread the word through the
service and as journalist Jonathan Kealing, online editor of the Lawrence (KS) Journal-
World said "The power of Twitter is when people start spreading your stories for
you" (Schultz and Sheffer, 2010: 229).!
!
Having in mind how useful it is for breaking news and getting stories out, there are still
some who may think of it as not that useful, so in turn, Hambrick et al (2010) decided to
relate Twitter use for a journalist to theory, specifically the study of uses and gratifications
theory which as they say it’s: !
!
!
A theory from the communications field that focuses on how users engage in !
different activities and their motives for doing so (Ruggiero, 2000). These motives !
help articulate what users stand to gain from their participation or conversely what !
they may lose or miss by opting out. (2010: 457)!
!
A simple theory to help you evaluate how useful something will be for you, and when used
on Twitter for journalists, not only breaking news and promotion of their work are at the
centre stage but it also works for entertainment purposes as well as interaction. Hambrick
and Sanderson (2012) point out how Twitter has shifted sports news from a one way
direction to a two way direction where a conversation can occur. Davis (2010) states that
there is this erroneous general idea that ordinary citizens want to engage in conversation
online with politicians. He even shows some statistics showing how interactions with
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 23
politicians is not that big on the web, but in sports, this is completely different. Maybe it’s
because of what I mentioned before about mediated events and fandom but in their study
about athletes and Twitter, Hambrick et al (2010) found out that of 6 categories they
divided tweets in (which included breaking news, entertainment, promotion, interaction,
fandom and content sharing), the one with the highest percentage of tweets was
interaction, suggesting that athletes do like being contacted by their fans and use it as a
tool for communication with them. As they (Hambrick et al, 2010: 465) go on to further
explain, athletes can sometimes tweet right after the game has occurred, fulfilling the fans
need for immediacy and avoiding waiting for the sports news to hear comments from their
favourite stars. In this particular case, it’s tailored to athletes, but journalists fit perfectly in
as well. Today, it’s common for a sports journalist to tweet some information, giving the
people headlines, and then tweeting a link to the full report on the website or blog, thus
fulfilling the immediacy for the news of this digital age. Richard Wilson, an award wining
sportswriter from The Herald said the following of social media:!
!
!
Two reasons really why I use social media. When I was a freelance, I used Twitter to
raise my profile and showcase my work. I still do that, but also use it now to interact
with readers. You have to sit through responses at times, but you get a different
perspective and interesting feedback. I’d say the readers like the interaction, too, so it
works both ways. Also, it’s often a fairly good source of news, information and
analysis. (Interview with author, December 13, 2011 in Boyle, 2013: 96)!
!
So if we abide by the uses and gratifications theory, we can conclude that the benefits of
using Twitter for sports journalist include the ability to connect with their audience, their
sources and keep in touch with their global world in general. They can deliver fast,
immediate news, promote their work as well as getting theirs promoted by users and even
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 24
their peers and stay informed as they are not the only ones breaking news; athletes do it,
and as previously mentioned, citizen journalists as well. So what makes the journalist
stand out, now anyone seems to be able to break news, how can the sports journalist
react to this change to make their work stand out over the rest? What do they have to
offer?!
!
In the past chapter I wrote about the citizen journalist, how new technologies made it
possible for anyone to take responsibility and disseminate information (Antony and
Thomas, 2010: 1284) and as I also pointed out, Twitter is one of the services in which they
are taking an active role. But it also allows journalists to bring information as it is occurring,
as Hambrick and Sanderson (2012: 393) point out, journalists have established a sort of
telepresence for the audience, narrating the information only available in the event, an
example being the live tweeting of a press conference, an event that as the name implies,
happens for the press, not for the public, hence no citizen journalists. So the added value
for a journalists lies on giving the audience something special from inside the event, giving
us what television cannot. Websites, sports news sites, social media, they all give access
to an enormous amount of information to the people, so when talking about what makes
his Twitter feed important to follow, what does he do to add real value, Patrick Collins,
sportswriter for the Mail said the following after covering the Summer Olympics:!
!
I think it has got to a point where news is so quick that the competition to get there
first is, in a sense, pointless. The element of speed is lost when everything is so fast.
What came out of these Olympics is the back-story; it seemed every medalist had a
fascinating tale to tell. It was strangely affecting. There were a lot of interesting
people. (Wilson, 2012 quoted in Boyle, 2013: 96)!
!
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 25
I’ve written about how media events create a sense of nationalism and bonding, emotions
that are further strengthened in sports which create fandom and big sporting events are
followed with a ceremonial status and in the middle of this ritual, is the sports journalist,
traditionally bonded to sports and today embracing new tools emerging from a digital
revolution which is clearly changing their practice. How are they using Twitter, how are
they reacting to the citizen journalist breaking news and yet how much have their job
changed? The literature suggests their embracing Twitter to promote, break news and
interact with fans, feeding them the need for immediacy that prevails in the 21st century as
well as giving them inside information not everyone can access. Their us of Twitter and the
impact it’s having in their lives will be further examined in my own study.!
!

3. Methodology!
!
My research question was ‘How is Twitter transforming the practice of sports journalism,
and how are journalists coping with this transformation?’ and based on my literature
review, other questions arose which I wanted to get answers to. New technologies suggest
that Twitter is in fact changing journalism practice but just 1) How much has it changed it?
Furthermore, citizen journalists are a real thing now, 2) What are journalists thoughts on
this phenomenon?, and more importantly, 3) What type of changes are they? 4) How are
they using Twitter? For breaking news as suggested by the literature review or for other
reasons?!
!
These questions were tested with a short questionnaire given to some sports journalists
based in the UK and the United States of America. Data was collected from a carefully
compiled list of sports journalist from a wide range of media outlets who use Twitter, I
decided to include only english speaking journalist (although Tweeting in english was not a
requisite) as it would be easier for me to avoid translations later on, having in mind the
short time I was dealing with. Additionally, I decided to use a data analysis method, content
analysis to be specific to compare what the journalist said in the questionnaire with what
they actually tweeted and try to get an idea of how different their practice is right now by
what they tweet and how they tweet.!
!
Data Gathering!
!
The purpose of contacting the journalists directly was to get the first hand impressions and
thoughts on how is Twitter transforming their job; how has it changed their daily life and
how were they dealing with those changes. Because there are just too many sports
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 27
journalists, I decided to focus only on english speaking journalists based in the UK and the
United States of America who used Twitter. After doing a quick search on the web for the
most influencing sports journalists on social media in both countries, I started making a list
with those names and adding the 50 most respected sports journalists in the UK according
to the Press Gazette (
http://www.pressgazette.co.uk
/). After that, I randomly started adding
journalists from every major media outlet and checked that every journalist on the list had
a Twitter account. If they used it and how often didn’t matter at that time, I wanted to know
why they had it in the first place.!
!
In the last week of July and the first week of August, I invited every journalist in the list
which consisted of 109 sports journalists, by email to answer my questionnaire.
Additionally, because I was unable to find every journalist email address, I decided to
contact them via Twitter which turned out to be interesting as it would mean they were
actually reading the mentions they get and interacting. Some of the journalists who I
emailed and failed to reply were also tweeted because not only it would allow for a higher
chance of getting a reply, but also because sometimes they already have an overcharged
inbox so Twitter seemed a viable option. For this, I created a Twitter account in which I
explained in my profile what I was writing my dissertation on, and what university and
course I attended. I tweeted more than 50 journalists inviting them to answer my short
questionnaire where I asked direct questions like “
Why do you use Twitter as a sports
journalist? or Do you think Twitter is an essential tool for sports journalists? Why or Why
Not? In addition, general information like age, media outlet, experience and gender were
also collected.
When speaking about questionnaire based data gathering, Marianne
Franklin (2012) says they are suitable to get an insight on how people behave (Franklin,
2012: 171). In my case, one of my goals was trying to know how sports journalists
behaved on Twitter, so the questionnaire was going to be helpful. !
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 28
I decided to use this method which was used before by Schultz and Sheffer (2010) in a
similar study mostly out of necessity. In the beginning, I intended to do some face to face
interviews but after encountering a low desire from the journalists to set up a meeting and
having difficulties contacting some (a few where out on vacation as July is generally a slow
month in sports), I decided to email them. The last week of July and the first week of
August were chosen because of it being a slow period in sports as in the United States the
National Football League, Basketball tournaments, Hockey and even College Football
have not yet started, with only Baseball being halfway in the season and in the UK, the
Premier League hasn’t started either. So with almost every major sporting event on hold, I
thought this might increase the chance for me to get a reply from the sports journalists. Of
the 109 invites sent over email and Twitter, 49 said they would help me, but only 25 were
successful replies, sending me the questionnaire fully answered during my data gathering
time frame.!
!
Most of the replies were really helpful and went into detail like Oier Fano from Sportyou
and El Diario Vasco, who when asked ‘Do you have a personal relationship with any
athletes, if so, do you use Twitter to stay in touch with them?’ said “Yes, I do. For example,
Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Angel Rangel and Chico (Swansea football club), Ekaitz Saies
(kayak), Dani Díez (Spanish selection basketball player)” (Interview with journalist); while
only a couple being a bit brief in their answers and sometimes not really helpful like
Tancredi Palmeri from Gazzetta dello Sport and CNN who replied the same question with
a mere “Yes and yes” (Interview with journalist). Having a diverse group of journalists who
work on different sports and places around the world was really useful as it gave me a
much wider and bigger range of how Twitter is used by the journalists in different sports
offering different perspectives.!
!
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 29
Data Analysis!
!
As previously mentioned, analysing what the journalists Tweeted was also done to see
how they use the service, how often and what kind of things they tweet. Asking them
wasn’t going to be the only method as actually seeing what they wrote was complementing
my study. For this, I decided to do a content analysis which can be described as "any
qualitative and sense-making effort that takes a volume of qualitative material and
attempts to identify core consistencies and meanings" (Patton, 2002: 453). This technique
was used before by Hambrick et al (2010), as well as Chew and Eysenbach (2010),
analysing Twitter feeds for a specific period of time. !
!
So I started following 30 journalists with my Twitter dissertation account and compiled
every tweet between August 6th through August 12th, limiting myself to 30 tweets. Every
journalist who replied to my questionnaire was followed, as well as 5 of the most respected
and active sports journalists in the US according Mashable (
http://mashable.com/
). At the
end of those three days I had 658 tweets which were then coded to highlight key themes
and identify use patterns in the journalists Twitter usage.!
!
I coded each tweet independently into one of 5 categories based on what I was trying to
find out and trying to predict their usage habits. For example, as I wanted to know if they
used Twitter to communicate with athletes, one category was Interaction, which also
serves the purpose of knowing how often they interact (if any) with fans and followers. My
decision for selecting the categories wasn’t random, Hambrick et al (2010) used a similar
method in their study about athletes use of Twitter and I adapted it for my own study.!
!
So the categories for this particular study were: !
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 30
!
•Breaking News/Informing: In theory, this is supposed to be the main reason journalists
use Twitter for. Any tweet used to break a story or successive discussion of the story, the
developing of it, was filed under this category. !
!
•Interaction: Consists of a direct communication between the journalists with their
followers, be it with athletes or regular people. Here the intention was to find out how often
they reply to mentions they get, proving they read through what people write them as well
as finding out how often they would use Twitter to communicate with someone else instead
of using other means. In the literature review I wrote how Davis (2010) says some
politicians won’t be in contact with their followers but athletes according to Hambrick et al
(2010) will, here I set on analysing sports journalists.!
!
•Promotion/Linking to content: Tweets categorised here consist of their own’s work
promotion, the tweeting of reports and stories they wrote and sharing pictures or videos.
So any tweet linking to a full report or story in the website or advertising their work or
future activities like a TV show appearance was filed under this category.!
!
•Personal/Entertainment: I had my belief that on Twitter, journalists would be less formal
and even joke around, so this category mainly has to do with when they use their account
to tweet stuff not related to their job, anything not related with news reporting even if it has
to do with sports, point being that they will use the account more as a personal account
with their own views and not subjected to their media outlet. Here, everything from jokes to
personal opinion on current affairs will be labeled as Personal/Entertainment.!
!
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 31
•Sharing/Retweeting: This is basically when they tweet to promote work that’s not their
own. I intended to find out how often they would use Twitter to promote something a
colleague, competitor or even a ‘citizen journalist’ wrote. After reading (Boyle, 2013) how
now some journalists think the competition of being the first to break the news is pointless,
I wondered if they would retweet a tweet from someone else who’s actually reporting
something he hasn’t, as well as sharing a good piece of reporting written by someone else
be it from their own media outlet or from a competing outlet, having in mind the
implications that could bring.!
!
As this is a personal study carried out by myself, I was the only one sorting out the tweets
into each category, always trying to be as objective as possible but whenever I had doubts
I would consult with friends. Being the only one can be bad as the whole categorising
process depends on my judgement so I’ll consider that as a limitation to my study. Another
limitation was obviously the sample size, being a limited small sample was a main
concern, perhaps an alternative method for delivering the questionnaire might’ve
increased the response rate. Finally, time was a dominant limitation as it was a short
period and with more time in my hands, I could’ve reached a wider demographic and
surveyed sports journalists all around the world, getting a bigger picture of the usage in
different continents and languages. In the end, I’m still happy with the results obtained as
they provided me with some clear answers and usage tendencies that might be really
interesting for anyone in the sports business. !
!

4. Results!
!
Only one of the 25 journalists who replied was female. CNN, Metro, Daily Telegraph, The
Independent, Chicago Sun-Times, BBC and Daily Mirror were among the represented
media outlets, while Baseball, Ice Hockey, Football, Tennis, Cricket were among the sports
covered giving a wide coverage and diversity. Average age was 37.5 years old and the
average experience in journalism was 19 years. Each questionnaire was carefully read
and coded to highlight key themes like “changing”, “evolving”, “immediate” and more, while
also collecting data to help me answer the questions raised in the methodology chapter.!
!
For example, to the question of how much has Twitter changed sports journalism, !
Nick Parrott from BBC TV Sports says that Twitter has changed his job as it’s a “source of
stories” just like the wires from the Press Association were only that now news come
straight from the protagonists. Ben Dirs, also from the BBC emphasises how sportspeople
can get the message out there themselves without the need for intermediaries, the
sportspeople themselves being news sources today.!
!
For the question on citizen journalists, the majority of the journalists, 19 out the 25 said
they had no problems with it, main feeling is they actually think it’s a good thing, although
there does seem to be one main issue and concern which has to do with the veracity of
the story; every journalist admitted they had doubts when reading a citizen journalist story
and as Damian Johnson of the BBC and Premier League says about citizen journalism, he
“take[s] it with a pinch of salt” (Interview with journalist). Another key concern on the topic
is the quality of the journalistic piece. Some of the journalists have doubts with how good
these citizen journalists are, but as Henry Winter of the Daily Telegraph points out
“Strangely, I think it’s made people respect journalism more” (Ibid), this happening
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 33
because now people can easily differentiate good quality reporting from ‘amateur’ citizen
journalist stuff. !
!
On what type of changes are happening, the answer is related to the first question, where
they say it’s a news source, but also, some of the most commented changes going on in
general in the job were: 1) Speed, of which Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times said
that “It has made our jobs even more immediate. It’s common to see journalists tweeting
news immediately during interviews and news conferences”(Ibid); 2) The interaction they
now have with their audience, Kevin Garside of The Independent said that Twitter “has
broadened the conversation and promoted interaction, exposing journalists to a level of
intimacy with their audience that they could not have had before”(Ibid); and last but not
least, 3) The accessibility of information, which for them is really good, now Twitter has
made information accessible for everyone and it’s global. On this Graham Chase of
Wardle Agency said “Not long ago, information and stories were protected and you would
never get people effectively putting the stories they are filing for the following days papers
out there. Ultimately it shows that for many newspapers, the paper on the shelf is now the
bottom of the list of priorities” (Ibid) and on being global Richard Hookham said that
“Journalists are aware so much more of what is happening all over the world in their
chosen field. A story put up on an Australian news site, for example, can be tweeted out
and followed up in Britain within minutes” (Ibid).!
!
Finally, the last question the was on my mind had to deal with how exactly were the
journalists using Twitter, was there a trend of usage? My literature review suggested they
mostly use it for breaking news, promotion and interaction so for this, not only was I
reading their answers in which they actually said they mostly use it for those reasons, but I
also decided to do a content analysis as previously mentioned on the methodology which
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 34
would help me support the qualitative data and actually compare what they said in the
questionnaires with what they tweeted. Table 1 illustrates the distribution of the 658 tweets.!
!
!
As previously explained, the content analysis dealt with analysing 658 tweets, each being
coded and individually placed in one of five categories which I’ve illustrated in Table 1
above, selecting one tweet to exemplify each category, each tweet left as it was written,
spelling and grammar intact, the complete compilation of tweets can be found at the end in
Appendix. The category with the most tweets was Interaction with 248 (38%) tweets, one
example was Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) replying to an user saying “@NOaddiLA if the
NCAA clears him there's no need to apologise. All we have reported is there is an
investigation”. That tweet was in reply to an user who asked if Rovell would apologise for

Interaction was followed by Breaking News/Informing with 146 (22%) tweets which means
these two categories constitute 60% of the 658 tweets which is impressive but is backed
by what the journalists replied in the questionnaires when they say they mostly use it to
stay informed, breaking news, and staying in touch with followers. One example of
Breaking news is the one shown in Table 1 where a journalists is informing us of a transfer
in the football market, really simple, no long report, just a headline stating how the player
has changed teams.!
!
Sharing/Retweeting, had the third number of tweets with 105 (15%). Even though to some,
it might be considered inappropriate to share content from other media outlets, most
journalists replied in the questionnaire that if they saw quality they wouldn’t mind
retweeting it. Furthermore, the example shown in Table 1 was retweeted by three different
journalists in my analysis. @SamWallaceIndy, @ DTguardian and @henrywinter all shared
the same tweet: “RT @CliveTyldesley: Man Utd: DeGea Rafael Vidic Jones Evra Giggs
Carrick Cleverley Zaha VPersie Welbeck”; This being the starting line up of Manchester
United during their Community Shield match on August 11th. These three tweets were
retweeted from the same source by three different journalists, from three different media
outlets with a three minute difference showing how fast news fly on Twitter, one person got
hold of the official starting line up and tweeted it, this being retweeted on numerous
occasions getting the word out.!
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 36
!
Personal/Entertainment, or information not related to their jobs, had 86 (13%) tweets which
is not that much as I thought there would be yet there are some tweets like the one from
@bendirs1 shown in Table 1, a BBC journalists tweeting about a book he’s reading and
mocking the length of such book. Most of the journalists had similar tweets and some were
even completely off topic and meaningless like @alex_willis tweet saying “I think i just
broke my gearbox.” Something really personal and something you wouldn’t expect from a
journalist but more of a friend, exemplifying the informality of the short messaging service.!
!
Finally, the Promotion/Linking to content category had the fewest tweets with only 73, a
mere 11% which was strange to me as 15 of the 25 journalists who replied to my
questionnaire mentioned the promoting of their work or linking content as one of the main
reasons for their use of Twitter. The example in Table 1 is the typical tweet linking to a
match report or the full story after they’ve previously tweeted updates. In this case, the
tweet links to the match report of the Manchester United vs Wigan Community Shield
match but during the game, the user also tweeted updates from what was going on inside
the stadium and information like the man of the match.!
!
In summary, in the current study 658 tweets were analysed and placed in 5 different
categories; Breaking News/Informing, Interaction, Promotion/Linking to content, Personal/
Entertainment and Sharing/Retweeting. Breaking News and Interaction combined had
60% of the tweets while promotion had the fewest tweets of the five which is contradictory
to what most journalists said in the questionnaires. Most of them listed promotion of their
work as one of the main reasons for their Twitter usage, as well as staying informed, the
interaction with users and breaking news. The results showed that sports journalists like
the engagement with users, either to defend their point of view in a report or just to
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 37
participate in debates which as the results demonstrated have also become global, Twitter
putting information available for everyone, immediately after occurring and all around the
world. In general, journalists seem to embrace Twitter and are happy with it. To close this
chapter, I’d like to use Henry Winter’s answer to the question of How has Twitter ultimately
changed your role as a sports journalist? He said “[It’s] Been great, access to a different
audience, domestic and global. I laugh when I read English journalists posting ‘good
morning’ to their followers. Half their followers could be mid-afternoon, middle of the night.
It’s a global game” (Interview with journalist). Fast and global indeed.!

5. Discussion!
!
This dissertation sought to find out how is Twitter transforming the world of sports
journalism and understand how the journalists are dealing with those changes. My findings
would suggest that Twitter has indeed changed the ways journalists do their jobs, even
though some might want to downplay its importance like Ben Dirs of the BBC who had the
following to say about change in his job: “Personally, not much. I think the clue is in the title
- 'Twitter'. It's just for banter and tittle-tattle, or at least should be” (Interview with
journalist). As I already quoted before, Boyle (2006, 142) said that “sports journalism in the
digital age is, of course characterised by continuity and change” In this chapter I would like
to discuss the three main changes I found. !
!
The first and most obvious change is certainly the speed information travels. Oier Fano of
Sportyou says that “when you buy a newspaper in a kiosk, the newspaper has been
printed 8 hours before” (Interview with journalist) while on Twitter, you can get news
instantly and better yet, it’s free. Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times will go on to say
about Twitter that it’s “faster than AP news alerts” (Ibid), while Alex Thomas of CNN says
that it’s “essential as the wires used to be” (Ibid). In the literature review I wrote how to
some (Wilson in Boyle, 2013) being the first to break news is pointless, yet, speed has
escalated the race to break news and the immediacy Twitter provides has made the
audience hungrier for instant news and journalists will feed that hunger, be it with tweets
from inside the event, giving updates like “@SamWallaceIndy Just spotted the first 'In
David we trust' banner at Wembley #MUFC” or the retweets shown in the Results chapter,
three different journalists sharing the starting eleven of Manchester United from a different
source; it doesn’t matter who’s first, but informing your audience is. As Davis (2010)
mentioned, news are being produced quicker, either by journalists or other users, no point
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 39
trying to be first, and on that, every journalist agreed on, it’s a fast and global world in
which there’s no point saving an exclusive for the printed newspaper, exclusives are seen
in the form of retweets in this day and age and nobody seems to have a problem with that,
in fact, they like it. Jorge Arangure on Twitter disrupting the news cycle said “In a sense, it
has forced journalists to be more creative when it comes to reporting on events, games,
etc” (Interview with journalist).!
!
The second big change I found is the interaction. The literature review suggested that
athletes liked the interaction (Hambrick et al, 2010) while politicians didn’t (Davis 2010).
Sports journalists love it. They have embraced it really fast and although fans are the
primary recipients of the interactions, they also engage in tweet exchanges with other
colleagues like @darrenrovell, who tweeted “@brianstelter kudos on the big screen work
today”, congratulating his colleague on his appearance on television that day.
Furthermore, it’s interesting to note that not only will they engage in debates and
conversations with fans, but they will sometimes seek their help. Darren Rovell again
tweeted the following: “@darrenrovell POLL: Do you think Tiger can win 5 more majors &
pass Jack? #YES #NO cc #poptip”, referring to Tiger Woods chances on winning more
major tournaments. So not only will they engage with colleagues or fans to get feedback,
they also conduct polls right there on Twitter. Moreover, according to Henry Winter,
athletes will sometimes private message him on Twitter to tell him their side of the story
and get the facts straight (Interview with journalist). Finally, as previously mentioned,
Twitter is a place where fandom is kept alive (Schultz and Sheffer 2010) and generates
debates and sometimes, things can get messy. The following tweet generated a 28 tweet
conversation between 5 parties where some users where clearly bothered by the wording
used by the journalist. Oliver Kay (@OliverKayTimes) of The Times tweeted: “Moyes
insisting that Rooney will not be sold. Doesn't offer an answer when asked why he would
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 40
keep a player who wants to leave”.The journalists would defend his stance while some
users would attack his words showing a strong sense of fandom towards their club. This is
just one example of what journalists have to deal with on Twitter almost everyday, but if we
go back to the uses and gratifications theory (Hambrick et al 2010), this interaction
provides the journalists with instant feedback on their work, extra information as
sometimes they will get tipped off on an exclusive through Twitter or get some facts
checked like the Henry Winter example; and last but not least, it provides entertainment for
them, in Kevin Garside words “[Twitter] promoted interaction, exposing journalists to a
level of intimacy with their audience that they could not have had before. Personally, I
enjoy the engagement” (Interview with journalist) !
!
Finally, the last big change happening has to do with information. Twitter has certainly
opened up the news reporting to everyone, from the citizen journalists to athletes being
reporters now. Kevin Garside said for him Twitter is “essential because the athletes are
correspondents now” (Ibid), and Tancredi Palmeri mentioned how now sports institutions
and sportsmen sometimes speak through Twitter. This has caused Twitter to become a
vast source of information and most importantly, “it has become the main place to report
stories first” (Jim Callis, Interview with journalist). This freedom and change has brought
some good and bad. In football reporting, the relationship between writer and reader
changed a lot (McCarra, 2010) and showed how journalists don’t have a ‘sacred
knowledge’ while allowing regular citizens the chance to break the news. This raises the
debate of veracity on social media reporting. Not only is the information so vast on Twitter
that a lot is probably fake, and that race for being the first to break the news has the risk of
not being accurate. This phenomenon has caused a lot of distrust to the point that now not
even verified accounts on Twitter can be trusted; journalists explained in the
questionnaires how they will always wait to report on something they see on Twitter until
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 41
they themselves have verified the information. Moreover, the informality of Twitter doesn’t
really help to the cause. One example was the owner of Liverpool FC, John W Henry,
whose tweet from Image 1 caused a stir on Twitter!
Image 1!
with some even believing it wasn’t him, but someone who had hacked his account. Nick
Parrott tells how:!
!
!
There was some trepidation recently as to whether John W Henry’s “what are they
!
smoking at Emirates” tweet was genuine. We reported that Tweet, but said it came
!
from his account rather than him, until we could confirm with Liverpool/FSG that it
!
was a genuine Tweet. (Interview with journalist).!
!
Furthermore, hacking is not the only reason to tread lightly on Twitter these days. As Mike
McGrath (Ibid) points out, Jimmy Kebe (
www.theguardian.com
), a professional football
player tweeted he was moving to Newcastle United only to confirm he was joking hours
later, causing media outlets to report the news and confusing even his own fans. Clearly
the fast adoption of Twitter as a breaking news service has brought some mistrust, bad
use and pranks to journalism. On top of that, if doubtful information wasn’t enough, Chris
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 42
De Luca explains how when Mariano Rivera held a press conference to announce his
retirement, he followed the story on Twitter and had this to say:!
!
!
Several different outlets were tweeting every snippet of the news conference, !
including photos. The sad reality was that I never bothered to click on their links for !
more information. My constantly updated Twitter feed gave me all the news I !
needed.
But I can’t recall which reporter had the best news or the best updates. It !was just one
blast after another. It was good stuff as a consumer, but frightening to !
view as a
journalist because there was no real ownership on this unfolding story. ! (Ibid)!
!
Interesting to see how he feels journalists’ work is losing recognition and becoming just on
endless stream of information on a social media platform. This information being in danger
of getting mixed with citizen journalists tweets and getting lost in the endless Twitter feeds.
Ben Dirs of the BBC had this harsh words to say about citizen journalists “No point being
against it, it's happening and it's not going to change. And the spread of social media/blogs
etc has only highlighted what many suspected for years - that an awful lot of professional
journalists are merely fans with laptops”. While his words are a bit strong, the fact that
quality has taken a hit is obvious and you can get a sense of dispiriting among
professional journalists.!
!
However, as I said, these changes have also brought some good. As I explained in my
Results chapter, almost every sports journalists has no problem with citizen journalists
reporting, aside from the quality issue, and it is here where professional journalists should
excel and stand out. The literature review suggested that journalists have to stand out to
make their Twitter feeds worth following, if everyone is breaking news, why should we read
what certain journalists are writing and furthermore, why sometimes pay for that? The
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 43
answer in my opinion is quality. As showed earlier, Henry Winter believes citizen journalists
have made people appreciate more proper journalistic work, to tell the difference between
quality reporting and amateur reporting. On top of that, the credibility that comes just with
being a credited journalist for a respected media outlet bears a lot of weight. One example
is Nick’s Parrott tale about an incident in a football match. He says:!
!
!
I was at Anfield on the night Oldham player Tom Adeyemi claimed someone in the
!
crowd had racially abused him. I was sat nearby and there was no proof. A man !
was arrested a couple of days later, but charges were never made. Because I was !
able to report the truth about what had happened first hand (The Mirror claimed two !
fans had been arrested, when in reality two had been ejected for an unrelated ! matter
and there hadn’t been any arrests) (Interview with journalist)!
!
So the fact that he’s a BBC journalist made his story carry more weight, so in the end,
sports journalists add to reporting their analysis, commentary, insights, credibility and in
this digital world we live in, they should always add their journalistic excellence.!
!
So now that the internet has overtaken that system of ‘gates and gatekeepers’ by letting
sources and public communicate freely, a new journalism is being born, but these are
merely tools of journalism. It’s changing, Twitter, Facebook, Blogging, they are all new
techniques, tools, not replacements (Jones and Salter, 2012). Rather than dismissing them
or mocking them as some of the ‘old’ traditional journalists who lost their jobs did,
journalists should embrace them and use them for their advantage, to develop their
journalistic practice. As Hambrick and Sanderson said “social media may enhance rather
than truly transform sports news coverage” (2012: 386). Today, when something happens
in the sports world, Twitter is the place where all the action is happening, that’s why sports
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 44
journalist are present in it, to stay relevant and not have the risk of being left out (Ibid:
398). Andy McKenzie of LiveWire Sport talks about how quality journalism will never go
away, it’s true the job is changing but journalists just need to embrace the new platforms
and new audiences but always keeping quality (Interview with journalist).!
!

6. Conclusion!
!
I started this dissertation setting out to find out ‘How is Twitter transforming the practice of
sports journalism, and how are journalists coping with this transformation?’ Commencing
by giving a brief description of why sports matter in academic research, and how sporting
events seen as media events create a sense of bonding and strong nationalism. These
feelings take on a new dimension on Twitter, where discussions and debates are
welcomed and occur between every user, athletes and journalists not being exempt. New
media has brought changes to the journalism world, a barrier has been broken, taken
down, and new technologies have made information available to everyone, it’s up for
grabs, produced and shared by anyone and it’s this one of the biggest changes in modern
journalism, one that some ‘traditional’ journalist failed to comprehend. A new type of
journalist emerged called the ‘citizen journalist’ and started breaking news and writing their
own reports even though they have no proper journalism formation. Yet, Organisations and
media outlets alike are starting to understand, that Twitter is nothing to be afraid of,
content producers abound left and right now, sports audiences do not depend on any
media outlet or journalists to get their news, but by embracing Twitter and keeping
reporting good quality news, producing excellent reporting, not only can journalists stand
out, but they can also help their media outlet increase their web views and audience.!
!
Back in the literature review, I wrote how some journalists lost their jobs precisely for failing
to embrace new media, they couldn’t understand the changes it brought. Even though in
Sheffer and Schultz’s study (2010), their results showed little change in journalists'
perceptions, as I’ve shown in my results, there are a few and these changes include the
ability to promote through Twitter their reports and other journalistic pieces; interacting with
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 46
almost everyone on Twitter, giving them instant feedback and even help for reports; Twitter
has also given the world the ability to broadcast worldwide, giving journalists a global
audience and making everything faster to the point that news do not travel fast anymore,
they are immediate; and finally, what I wrote is the biggest change in my opinion, is Twitter
being the new main source of information, where journalists tweet breaking news and read
others’ news, it’s the place to be for staying informed, having almost every journalists in my
interviews replying they use Twitter as a source of information. These changes have
sparkled a debate on the state of traditional journalism.!
!
When asked if they felt traditional journalism was being threatened by digital journalism
and social media, 15 out of the 25 journalists said yes while the remaining 10 said no,
showing how divided they are on the subject. In my literature review I wrote about some
journalists who failed to adapt as well as quoting Boyle (2013) when he said that digital
technology changed completely the traditional association between the journalist, the
media, and the audience. While this is true according to not only my literature review but
also my findings, it’s interesting to note how yet some journalists think threatened is not
the right word, they believe what they do it’s still journalism and even though news
consumption has changed from traditional outlets to digital, it’s still journalism, just in a
different medium. Either way, things are still uncertain right now, journalism is changing or
evolving as some prefer to call it and no one knows for sure where it’ll go right now. Alex
Thomas from CNN said about Twitter “It’s just another layer to the job and has added to
the increasing pace of delivering news and also made it more immediate... it’s broken
down the barriers reporters and their viewers or readers” (Interview with journalist).!
!
Either way, the fact remains that Twitter has disrupted the way news are delivered, it
brought some changes which I’ve already been over and these have forced journalists to
Beneficiario COLFUTURO 2012 47
adapt, and evolve. How are sports journalists coping with these changes? By embracing
them, Twitter is the place to be once breaking news occur, the discussion will ignite in this
digital space and as a journalist, you don’t want to opt out, because in the end, Twitter is a
really useful tool that in my opinion is not trying to replace or kill journalism in any way, on
the contrary, it’s helping it evolve and improve. As Henry Winter said “circulations were
sliding pre-digital. Digital has been brilliant for journalism. Who cares what the platform is:
Twitter, Facebook, online, print. It’s still journalism. Different means. We’re now
decathletes (slightly out of breath ones)” (Ibid), they are still producing journalism, and it’s
their job to maintain the excellence in quality normally attributed to journalists.!

NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:47 @StephenKavanag1 Gerrard was tempted, no one
ever bid for Carragher, agree on Fowler.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:46 @Robin_Crimes meant Luiz not Luis
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:45 @Robin_Crimes doesn't seem anyone is for sale -
Bale, Fabregas, Rooney, Baines, Suarez, Luis.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:44 @StephenKavanag1 possibly. We'll see if Bolton
come back up.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:43 @StephenKavanag1 if Spearing was as talented as
Bale would he stay? Doubt it. Not much loyalty in
football.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:41 @bidit76 you're right.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:41 @Robin_Crimes so why are Arsenal preparing
another bid as has been reported?
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:40 @mannynijjar if Bale deal collapses Real might come
in for him.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:39 @StephenKavanag1 if you get to Spearing's age
without knocking on England's door you don't have a
hope at the top level. He'd know that.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:38 @StephenKavanag1 I'd rather an amazing prima
donna than a rubbish local. Attitude can be worked
on, if the talent isn't there you're doomed.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:36 @cocmay16 hope you're right.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:35 @mannynijjar that's why I wouldn't be sad to see him
go abroad where he wouldn't be a threat. Arsenal
hurt themselves selling RVP to United
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:34 @Robin_Crimes I'd only agree with you on that if a
foreign club doesn't make a bid. I just wish they'd tell
Arsenal publicly to go away.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:32 @StephenKavanag1 Spearing could have left years
ago for regular first team football elsewhere.
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:32 @StephenKavanag1 And it annoys me when they
know they're not good enough, but are happy to stick
around in the reserves instead of playing
Interaction
NickParrottTV 9 Aug 2013 00:30 @StephenKavanag1 I don't care for him. Players
who aren't good enough are leeches on the wage bill.
