Oval Patchwork Stars

14

By Jane Chiodini

Materials Required:

Patterned fabric (see table for quantity).
Plain fabric (see table for quantity).
Backing material or lightweight card.
Ruler.
P.V.A. Craft adhesive.
Card scrap for making templates.
Card mount with oval aperture.

If you enjoyed making the patchwork star

cards in the Summer 1996 magazine (Issue 2,
page 5), then why not progress onto the oval
shaped aperture. As can be seen, the design
makes a very attractive Christmas card and one
which can later be framed and brought out to use
as a decoration over the years to come. You will
need to follow the original instructions, making

minor adjustments as
detailed in this article.
(For those who do not
have these instructions
- back issues are still
available, phone 0181
885 2655).

* Add one extra folded triangle to panel bottom for this size.

Variations To The Original Method:

On stage 3, two different templates are used

to position the folded triangles. A wider template
is used at the top and bottom of the star, elongat-
ing the design so that it ‘fills’ the oval shape,
whilst the template used in stage 2 is used again
for the sides in stage 3. (see Sample A). This is
the only variation and you can the continue to
make the card up following the method given.

Why not experiment with other shapes? The

bookmark on the previous page is very easy and
is made from stage one, then two simple rows of
folded triangles added on.

Many different types and colours of fabric or

paper work well for these designs. All you need
to consider is how well they co-ordinate with
each other and your chosen mount. Metallic or
silky fabric adds a lovely touch of luxury as these
pictures illustrate.

Additional template - E = 19 x 25mm.

The chart above gives the exact measurements

for each size of card, including the range of
Christmas design cards, (AP24, AP31 and AP46).
