“TRAFFIC LIGHTS”

ORGANISATION

Each player has a ball

Playing area is 20x20m

Coach has 3 cones - one green, one red, one yellow

The coach will dictate the tempo of the session

by the sequence and speed of the signals

ACTIVITY

Introduce the game to the players without a ball

Red means ‘Stop’

Yellow means ‘Pause’ - jog on the spot

Green means ‘Go’

On the call of "yellow" players jog on the spot

Add in different actives for the yellow signal

- hop on one leg, toe - taps, skipping, etc.

When not using the ball the coach must ensure the players

are on the balls of their feet at all times when running

Make sure the players understand the signals and only

add more signals when they can apply them correctly

“TREASURE CHEST”

ORGANISATION

Split players into 4 teams of 3 players per team

Place 15-20 balls in a central area, surrounded by cones

The distance between the centre and the teams can vary

from 5m to 10m, depending on the player’s age/ability

Collect as many balls as possible from the central area

and place them back in your team’s area

Keep going until all the balls are removed

from the central area

Dribble/ pass/ head/ throw as many balls as possible back

to your team’s area when the coach starts the game

“CUPS AND SAUCERS”

ORGANISATION

Mark out an area 20 x 20m with cones

Randomly distribute ten yellow cones and ten red

cones in the area, the yellow cones are turned up

and the red cones turned down

Divide the players into 2 teams of 6 players each

and give each team a set of bibs

On the start signal from the coach,

the players attempt to turn the opposition’s cones

ACTIVITY

When the coach blows the whistle, one team attempts to

turn the cones up-side-down

At the same time the other team attempts to turn the

cones the right-way-up

A player can only turn over 1 cone at a time

The game continues for 30 seconds

At the end of the game the coach counts the number of

cups and saucers

ORGANISATION

Place 6 balls in a storage area, approximately

10-15 metres from the players

Split players into 3 groups of 3 players

per group

Only one person per group can go at a time

Only collect one ball at a time

ACTIVITY

One player of each team starts on the coach’s signal

Each player runs to the storage area collects a ball

and brings it back to their own area

When a ball is successfully retrieved to their area, the

next player is allowed to go and collect the next ball

“SCORE IN THE GOAL”

ORGANISATION

Grid is 30m x 20m

Group players in pairs with same coloured bib and one

ball

Create 10 goals, 2 cones of the same colour 1 metre

apart randomly in the grid (Not close to the perimeter)

ACTIVITY

The Coach starts the game on the signal of a whistle

Each team tries to score a goal by passing the ball through

a goal and then moving on to another goal

A goal is scored when a player pass the ball through the goal

to their partner

Passes made into space through the goal do not count

Players cannot score consecutively through the same goal

A defending player cannot tackle, only block the goal

The game lasts for 30 seconds - Rotate defenders after every

game

“THROUGH THE CONES”

ORGANISATION

The centre markers are 3-5 metres apart

The grid size is 15x15m

2 teams of 2 players per team

The players are positioned at opposite sides of the grid

The player’s pass the ball through the centre cones to

the players on the other side

Each player receives a pass on their turn

Only passes made through the cones are counted

ACTIVITY

Player 1 passes the ball through the two centre cones to player 2 at

the opposite side. Player 2 controls the ball and passes the ball to

player 3. Player 3 controls the ball and passes the ball to player 4

Player 4 controls the ball and passes the ball to player 1.

This continues and the sequence is repeated

Practice with a stationary ball if the players are experiencing

difficulty, then with a moving ball

Move quickly after passing the ball to leave space for your team-

“PASS AND TURN”

ORGANISATION

Grid size is 12 x 20m

Place a server with a ball at both ends of the grid

and 2 receivers in the middle of the grid

The server passes their ball to the receiver

who controls the ball and passes it back to the server

The receivers then turn and run to the opposite server

to receive a pass

They then turn and receive a pass from the other server

continuing the sequence

Rotate the players every 30 seconds

“KING OF THE RING”

ORGANISATION

Area 20 x 20 metres

Each player has a ball

In 60 seconds knock as many other players’ footballs

out of the grid while at the same time protecting

their own ball

When your ball is knocked out, retrieve it quickly

and return to the game

To make the exercise easier increase the grid size

The practice starts with the players dribbling their ball freely

around the inside of the grid

Players must use both feet and all parts of their feet

Use a variety of surfaces to turn with the ball such as outside,

inside and sole of the foot

The players react to a series of commands from the coach: stop,

SAFETY POINTS

Ensure area is large enough for the 8-10 players (20m x 20m)

Leave 3-5 metres between grids if there is more than 1 grid

Play sensibly . . . no pushing, bumping or dangerous tackling

ADAPTATIONS

One – two players can play without a ball and knock out other players balls for 30 seconds then rotate players roles

Divide the players into 2 teams and they try to knock out the oppositions balls while protecting their own ball

COACHING TIPS

Maintain control over the ball at all times

Shield their ball at all times when put under pressure

Build up the speed of the game gradually

Players use a change of direction and speed to evade players

Players try to look for free space at all times

Bend their knees and drop their shoulders when turning

When turning, get the ball out of your feet and into the direction you want to turn quickly

ORGANISATION

Area is 20 x 20m

Divide the players into groups of 5

Each player has a number 1 to 5

1 ball per group

ACTIVITY

Pass the ball by hand until the sequence is remembered

The practise starts with player 1 passing to player 2,

player 2 passes to player 3, player 3 passes to player 4,

player 4 passes to player 5 and player 5 passes to player 1

Continue this sequence

Each receiving player must call out their number / name

to attract the attention of the passing player

The players should move around the full area of the grid,

constantly adjusting their position and presenting them self

for a pass when it is their turn to receive a pass

Players should be encouraged to look around them before they

receive a pass, enabling them to identify the next passing option

Ensure the players pass the ball accurately and to feet

Encourage players to take as many touches as is needed to control the ball before passing it to the next player

ACTIVITY

Group the players by height and ability.

The Coach starts all games with the sound of a whistle.

When a goal is scored, the goalkeeper restarts the game by

passing the ball out.

If the ball goes out of play, the ball can be passed back

into play.

Change the goalkeeper when a goal is scored.

Game time should vary from 3-8 minutes per match.

Group players in pairs, each pair will wear the

same colour of bibs, one ball and 2 pair per pitch

Mark out a series of colour coded pitches depending

on the number of players

The pitch length is 10-15m from goal to goal

Goals are 2-3 metres wide

Pitches will run parallel - goals are 2-3m metres apart

Each game will last 1-2 minutes, followed by rest/change

over to the next pitch

ACTIVITY

One pair will stay on their pitch and the other pair will move

onto the next pitch, in a clockwise direction

To restart the next game the new team onto the pitch will start
with possession

The ball is never out of play. Once the ball leaves a pitch, the

players must try to bring it back to their pitch as quickly as

possible

Last player back is the goalkeeper and cannot use their hands

The players must act as referee

The goal is 4m wide and the balls are size 3 & 4

Place 4 footballs at each goal

When defending, one attacker on each side of the goal

and the other in the centre 1 metre ahead

ACTIVITY

Players who are defending their goal are not allowed to save

the ball with their hands, like goalkeepers

No shots can be taken from outside the small box and shots

must be taken on a rotation basis from the ground

The defenders must remain inside the small box when defending

their goal

Players can use their supply of balls that are situated at their post

when the opposition shots wide

All games should start and finish together to help organisation

Games should last for 2 minutes, with 1 minute rest between

games

If an attackers shoots wide of the goal they must retrieve the ball as soon as possible, their team is now reduced

by a defender while defending, until they returns to their goal with the ball

Players are allowed to use their hands to save the ball

COACHING TIPS

Ensure all the shots are on target and the players concentrate on accuracy and not power

If there are rebounds of the defenders then they must not shot, the ball goes back to the defenders

Shots must be taken using both feet

Remember to keep the head steady and eyes fixed firmly on the ball when shooting

“ATTACKERS AND DEFENDERS”

ORGANISATION

4 players per team, 2 teams, with bibs

4 attackers in an area with a ball each dribbling inside the area

3 defenders in the other area, passing a ball to each other,

1 goalkeeper in the goals (4m wide)

The attackers/ defenders areas are 8x8m,

10 - 15m from the goals

Change the goalkeepers after 3 goals have been scored

Change the role of the teams after every 2 minutes

Ensure all players are attackers, defenders and goalkeepers

ACTIVITY

Attacker moves out of the back of their area and try to score

Attackers can only go when the other attacker has taken their shot

and cleared the playing area

The attacker can shoot as soon as they feel they can score

Defender leaves their area through the cones nearest the goals

and tries to prevent the attacker scoring

When defending, players must stay on their feet and not dive into tackles

The defenders are encouraged to keep their head up to

ADAPTATIONS

Play without a defender to start the game

Make the distance between the dribbling area and the goal smaller / bigger depending on the players ability

Make the distance between the defenders area and the attacker’s area smaller / bigger depending on the players ability

Make the goals bigger / smaller depending on the player’s ability

COACHING TIPS

The players concentrate on accuracy and not power when shooting

Encourage attackers to shoot as soon as they feel they can score

When an attacker is confronted by a defender, encourage them to use a trick/move to create space

for a shot at the goal

ORGANISATION

Split players into 2 teams of 5 players per team

The playing area is 30x25m

The goals are 4m wide

The games duration will be 3-6 minutes

with 1-2 minute rest

The players in possession of the ball cannot run with the ball

Possession can only be gained by interceptions

or when the ball touches the ground

ACTIVITY

Ensure the teams are 5 v 5 or 4 v 4

Adjust the pitch size depending on the player’s age and ability

The players movement should not be in straight lines

encourage random movements

There is to be no tackling or physical contact

Use different size and shape footballs where possible

The players can pass the ball using a variety of throws –

overhead, under arm, bowling, etc.

Goals can be scored with header or volleys

Encourage players to rotate positions during the games, attackers become defenders and vice versa

COACHING TIPS

Encourage the players to support the player on the ball

Encourage the players to keep possession at all times

When the players are moving encourage them to move into space in order to receive a pass

ORGANISATION

Mark an area 18x 40m with one goal 6m wide

Divide the players into 5 teams of 2 players each

Place one goalkeeper in goal and 5 balls at the side

of the goal

The keeper plays the ball out into the area and

the teams try to score a goal on the goalkeeper

ACTIVITY

When the teams scores they rest until all but one of the

other teams score a goal

The teams that score then re-enter the game until there is

one team left

Group the players as fairly as possible by ability and size

Players may not stand close to or on the goal line in order

to score or prevent another team from scoring

The goalkeeper can only play the ball to open spaces and

must not pass to any player in particular

The coach must be strict and avoid any rough play during

the matches as it can become competitive

The players will rejoin the game once a final 2 teams have

completed their game

When the ball leaves the playing area, the goalkeeper will

restart the game

In the final round of games it takes 1 goal to win - If a goal is not scored within 30 seconds,

the other teams re-enter a new game

COACHING TIPS

Encourage the players to link with their team-mate to score and defend the goal

That the players position themselves in order to score of rebounds during the games

Encourage the players to shoot at every opportunity

To create opportunities to score encourage the players to use a trick/move to create a shooting opportunity
