Summary of the course
This course is an introduction to
computer architecture
and
computer organization
. Computer architecture is
how the programmer sees the machine (as an assembler
programmer) while computer organization refers to how
the machine is organized (in terms of CPU, memory
organizations, I/O devices). We will discuss the
organization from the
combinational and sequential circuit
level to see how registers, memory organization, and
arithmetic and logic circuits are implemented
. We will also
talk about control design, and look at the two principle
examples:
hardwired control and microprogramming
.
