Subject:
Proximity Switches and Adjustment
Models Affected:
E 30-050 FR (Z-943) with Second-stage Mast Detection (all units with
triplex and quad-plex masts after 2500U serial number)
Description:
On E-FR model trucks, there is a proximity switch mounted at the base of the mast to signal
when the mast travels beyond free lift into secondary lift. This bulletin will advise how to properly
adjust the proximity switch to ensure accurate operation and prevent damage to the switch.
The proximity switch allows the truck to differentiate between free lift and secondary lift stages.
When in secondary lift, the maximum truck speed is reduced to approximately 3.0 miles per
hour. The proximity switch also allows the truck to show the proper weight transducer display by
deducting the weight of the upper mast channels.
If the mast proximity switch is out of adjustment, it may indicate the mast is extended into
secondary lift when it is fully lowered and reduce the truck speed. An out-of-adjustment switch may
also come in contact with the moving mast channels and be damaged. Proximity switches
and harnesses can be damaged by failing to disconnect the harness from the switch when
removing the mast from the truck.
The proximity switches are threaded and have a jam nut to retain the adjustment. The distance
from the end of the switch to the face of the mast channel varies by the number of stages within
the mast. The distances from the face of the proximity switch to the mast channel are noted on
the following page.

Proximity Switches and Adjustment
Models Affected:
E-FR’s (Z-943) with Second-stage Mast Detection (all units with triplex
and quad-plex masts after 2500U serial number)
Triplex Masts:
Proximity switch must be flush with the
cross-member it is mounted in
Quad-plex Masts:
Proximity switch must protrude ½ inch
from the cross-member it is mounted in
In the event of proximity switch harness damage, a replacement plug end can be installed rather
than replacing the main wiring harness. The part number for the replacement plug 2037568.
There is also a part number error in the parts manual for the mast proximity switches. Item #25
on page 89 & item #35 on page 131 of Hyster Parts Manual 897795 Dated 4/97 refer to the
proximity switch harness, not the switch itself. The proximity switch P/N 1454838 will work for
all masts that require a proximity switch.
