Origin  

Pelvic surface of the sacrum between (and 
lateral to) anterior sacral foramina 1-4, 
superior border of greater sciatic foramen, 
and pelvic surface of the sacrotuberous 
ligament 

Insertion  

Superior border of greater trochanter of 
the femur 

Actions  

Lateral (external) rotation of the hip; may 
assist in abduction when the hip is flexed; 
may assist in hip extension 

Nerve  

Sacral plexus (L5, S1,2)
