Origin  

Spinous processes of the 1st through 5th 
thoracic vertebrae 

Insertion  

Medial margin of the acromion process 
and superior lip of the spine of the scapula 

Actions  

With the origin fixed, the middle trapezius 
adducts the scapula.  
Acts to stabilize the scapula during 
upward scapular rotation. 

Nerve  

Spinal accessory nerve (CR XI); ventral 
rami C2, 3, 4
