Origin  

Superficial head: flexor retinaculum and 
trapezium 
Deep head: trapezoid and capitate bones 

Insertion  

Base of proximal phalanx of the thumb, 
radial side; extensor expansion 

Actions  

Flexes the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) 
and carpometacarpal (CMC) joints of the 
thumb; assists in thumb opposition; may 
extend the interphalangeal joint via the 
extensor expansion 

Nerve  

Superficial head: median nerve 
Deep head: ulnar nerve
