I’m sitting in my bedroom and writing this. I’ve just got back from
my trip to the USA with Dan. I’ve been on lots of trips abroad
before, but I’ve never been on one like this!
I asked Dan to go with me because he’s usually a very sociable
person and I thought he would be a good travelling companion.
But he was completely different when we were travelling. When
we were visiting cities, he didn’t want to do any of the things I
wanted to do. I thought he was really lazy. And he was mean
too, he never wanted to pay his share. While we were travelling
around, he borrowed lots of money from me and I haven’t had it
back yet. Also, he’s usually a very confident person, but he
wasn’t like that on the trip. When we arrived in a new place, he
was always nervous that someone would rob us. He thought
everyone in the street was a mugger! Of course, nothing
happened. And he was so inconsiderate! I took a backpack but
he took an enormous suitcase. He often said it was too heavy
for him and I had to carry it! He didn’t care that it was hard for
me. I got angry with him quite often but when I did, he got upset
and told me that I was being unkind to him.
So it wasn’t exactly an enjoyable trip. Since we got back, I haven’t
seen Dan and he hasn’t contacted me yet. But I’ve already started
planning my next trip – to Scandinavia. I haven’t booked anything

A I’ve been in the same school since I was eleven, and I’ve

We’ve just got a new girl in our drama class. She’s really
horrible, and she’s particularly horrible to me. I don’t want to
stop doing drama because it’s really interesting, but if I don’t
do something about it I’ll be unhappy.
B I share a flat with three other students but I’m the only one who

too busy because they have to do a lot of work for their course.
I’m in the same position as them but I do all the housework
because I don’t want to live in an untidy, dirty place.
C My situation at work has been quite bad for a long time.
This is because of a colleague, who has worked with me
since the beginning of the year. He’s extremely rude and he
never says sorry for the terrible things he says. Before he
joined the company I enjoyed my job, because it was
interesting and challenging, but I don’t like it any more and
I’ve decided to leave and get another job.
D My brother is very unhelpful at home. He always says he’s
too tired to finish his household chores. I don’t mind doing
my share, but I don’t want to do his, too. I want to say
something to him about it, but I know that he will react very
badly and shout at me. I’m not frightened of him but I don’t
really want to have an argument.
E
Where I work, we’re not allowed to do all sorts of things
because our boss is very strict. My family say that I’d better
look for another job, but I’m not sure. I’ve heard that the boss
is going to move from our office to another department and I

A Hello and welcome to today’s programme. We’re going to look at a
very interesting subject today – body language. And I’m very
pleased to welcome one of the best psychologists in the country –
Dr Matthew Elliot. Hello, Doctor Elliot.
B Good morning.
A So what is body language, exactly?
B Well, it’s not easy to talk explain in just a few minutes, but it’s the
way that we communicate using our bodies. When we stand or move
in a certain way, people watching us can often tell how we feel.
A I see. That’s really interesting. Can you give us an example of body
language?
B Yes, of course. Well, let’s imagine that someone has his hands in
front of his mouth when you’re talking to him.
A OK, what does that mean?
B It means he’s lying to you.
A Really? That’s very interesting.
B But, let’s imagine we’re looking at a person who is holding his hair
with both hands.
A Yes.
B Well, that means that he’s had some bad news, and he can’t believe
it.
A That one’s pretty clear.
B Yes, it is. But what about this one? When someone just touches his
or her hair with one hand. What do you think that means?
A Er, is the person worried?
B Well, not exactly, no. It means that this person can’t make a
decision.
A Oh, OK. Time for one more example?
B Yes, of course, and this is one we see a lot, both at work and at
home, and that’s the person with crossed arms. Imagine a woman
with her arms crossed in front of her body, and imagine that she’s
also looking directly at us.
A Oh, yes, you see that a lot.
B You do, and it means that the person has a negative feeling about
you. She’s being aggressive. Of course, she doesn’t intend to show
you this, but her body shows it to you anyway.
A They feel negative, right. Well, I feel really positive after talking to
you, Dr Elliot, and I’m so glad …

And did anything unusual happen?
Woman
Well, yes, at about half past eleven. I was
watching TV when I heard something. I don’t
know what it was. It was a very loud noise.
Police officer
OK, so you heard a loud noise at eleven thirty.
2 Police officer
And what about you, Madam. Your name is …
Woman
Mrs Brown. I think I heard the sound of a gun
shot.
Police officer
Are you sure it was a gun?
Woman
Oh, yes. I was cooking my dinner when I heard it
and I thought, ‘That was a gun.’
Police officer
OK, thanks.

3 Police officer
And you, sir … Can I have your name?
Boy
Liam Johns.
Police officer
Well, Liam. Did you see or hear anything?
Boy
Yes. Yes, I did. I was riding my bike when I saw two
strangers. They got out of a black Mercedes and
went into the apartment.
Police officer
Two strangers. Thank you. Do you know which flat
they visited? …
4 Police officer
Now, Mrs Reeves. Did you see or hear anything
unusual?
Woman
Well, I was talking to my mother.
Police officer
So your mother was here, too.
Woman
No, no, we were talking on the phone. Then I
heard shouting. Two men shouting, I think. They
were very angry.
5 Police officer
And you’re Tony. So, what were you doing at
about eleven thirty last night?
Man
I was doing some housework cleaning the
windows in my living room.
Police officer
And did you see anything?
Man
Yes, I did. I saw two people in the victim’s
apartment. They were fighting with him.
Police officer
That’s really interesting. Can I …
6 Police officer
And what about you, Simon?
Man
I was in my room, reading.
Police officer
Right.
Man
And then I heard a scream. It was terrible.
Police officer
Yes, I’m sure. OK, well, …

Hello and welcome to Your kind of holiday. Today, I’m
in Bristol, and I’m talking to young people about what
kind of holidays they like. And here’s my first guest,
Alina. Welcome to the show, Alina.
Woman
Thanks.
Man
OK, Alina. So, tell us about … your kind of holiday!
Woman
Well, my favourite holiday is definitely a beach
holiday. I’ve been on a few beach holidays with my
parents, and they’ve all been great.
Man
And what do you like about beach holidays?
Woman
I love the sunny weather. I can spend hours lying on a
beach!
Man
Isn’t it boring?
Woman
Oh, no. We don’t just lie down and do nothing all day.
We swim a lot, too. And Mum and I like reading books
as well. It’s very relaxing.
Man
Yes, that’s true. And do you always go to the beach on
holiday?
Woman
No. We like sightseeing holidays, too. My parents are
very interested in history, and historical places, so we
go to places with a lot of history.
Man
So the best places for your family are countries with
good beaches and historical places?
Woman
Yes, that’s right. We’ve been to Italy, Greece, Turkey
and Croatia. They’ve all got great beaches, and a lot
of places to visit, too. And I love the food in these
countries.
Man
Well, I can see why you like going to them. Thanks
very much for talking to us today, Alina.
Woman
It’s been a pleasure.
Man
OK, and now I’m going to ask our next guest … Peter.

1 Receptionist
Hello, reception.
Man
I’m sorry, but my hotel room is awful.
Receptionist
What room are you in, sir?
Man
Room 236.
Receptionist
2-3-6. OK. I’m sorry, sir. What’s the problem?
Man
The TV doesn’t work and the shower is broken.
Receptionist
Can you call the hotel manager on 3345? He can
send someone to your room.
Man
I don’t believe it! I haven’t got time to wait in my
room. This is a four-star hotel.
Receptionist
I do apologise, sir. Would you like to change your
room?
Man
No. I want to check out and get my money back!
2 Woman
Excuse me. Excuse me.
Boy
Yeah?
Woman
You dropped some paper in my front garden.
Boy
No, I didn’t.
Woman
You did. I saw you. Now I want you to pick it up.
Boy
I’m not going to pick it up, and you don’t know who
I am so you can’t do anything about it.
Woman
I’m sorry, but I can. I work with your dad and I know
where you live.
Boy
Oh. Right. OK. I’ll pick it up.

Leanne
I’m really looking forward to starting my new job as a
teacher. I’ve always wanted to teach children and now I’ve
got my teaching degree.
I know I’ll work very hard during term time because I’ll have
about seven hours of lessons a day. Sometimes, I’ll have
after-school activities as well so I won’t have much free time
during the week. But I’ll get really long school holidays! The
money’s quite good, too – about £20,000 a year to start
with. I’m definitely going to work hard. Maybe I’ll be a head
teacher one day.
Dilip
I’ve been a business man for about thirty years and I’m really
bored with my job. So I’m going to retire and do something
completely different: next week, I’m starting work as a
postman!
I don’t need any qualifications for my new job, and I’ll have a
very relaxing job because I’ll be outdoors all the time. I’ll
meet a lot of people, so it is going to be interesting. The
main problem will be money: I won’t earn very much money
at all – about five pounds per hour, in fact. But the great
thing for me is that I start at six o’clock in the morning, and I
finish at twelve – just in time for a late lunch. That’s only six
hours a day. I expect I’ll really enjoy the free time.
Ginny
Next week, I’ll be a qualified nurse. I’ve got a nursing degree
from university. Next week I’m going to start work in a
hospital in Manchester.
As a new nurse, I won’t earn very much. I’ll only earn about
four hundred pounds a week, but money isn’t very important
to me. It’ll be a tiring job, and the hours will be long –
usually nine hours a day. I think being a nurse will be a really
difficult job. Sometimes, I’ll also have to work at night. I think
that will be hard, but it will be really good to help people. I
won’t be rich, but I’ll be happy.

Sarah

Mum
Yes, darling.
Sarah
Can I watch a rock concert on TV tonight? It starts at eleven
o’clock.
Mum
No, it’s Tuesday, Sarah. You know you have to go to bed at ten
o’clock during the week.
Sarah
I know, but this is a Coldplay concert. They’re my favourite
group.
Mum
I’m sorry, Sarah, but you have to go to school tomorrow. You’re
allowed to stay up late at the weekend, aren’t you? But you
can’t stay up late during the week.
Sarah
OK, well, I’m going to play my guitar then.
Mum
Oh, no, you aren’t! It’s nine o’clock already. Your sister’s
asleep. You know you’re not allowed to play it when your
sister’s gone to bed.
Sarah
Oh, all right. Can I read a book then?
Mum
Well, of course you can, Sarah! … Wait a minute, which book?
Sarah
House of Horrors – it’s brilliant!
Mum
No, you can’t read horror stories. If you do, you won’t sleep
well, now will you?
Sarah
I’m not allowed to do anything in this house!
Mum
Don’t be silly. You can play computer games.
Sarah
Yes – only for two hours a day. Anyway, I don’t want to do
that. They’re all boring.
Mum
Well, you’ve got lots of homework for Friday. You’re always
allowed to do that!
Sarah
Oh, thanks a lot, Mum.

Presenter
Hello and welcome to Planet Earth. And this week, we’re
talking about recycling. With us in the studio today is
Peter Evans, from the group Recycle Today. Welcome to
the programme, Peter.
Peter
Thank you.
Presenter
So what are the advantages of recycling?
Peter
Well, of course, recycling is much safer and cleaner than
using landfill sites.
Presenter
Yes, but it’s not as easy for us.
Peter
What do you mean exactly?
Presenter
Well, we have to have lots of different bins to put the
rubbish in.
Peter
Not lots, actually. I just have to sort my rubbish into four
separate materials – glass, paper, cans and plastic.
Presenter
It’s more difficult at the recycling plant, though, isn’t it?
Peter
Yes, I suppose it is. They have to keep all these different
materials in different containers.
Presenter
And some things have to be sorted again, don’t they?
Peter
That’s right. The glass is sorted into different colours, and
the paper is sorted into newspapers, magazines and
cardboard. But that’s all.
Presenter
Oh, OK. Then what happens?
Peter
Everything is put into big containers and then it’s crushed
so that it breaks into little pieces.
Presenter
And then everything can be used again, I suppose.
Peter
No, not yet. Now the different materials are sold to other
factories – the glass goes to a glass factory, the plastic
goes to a plastic factory, and so on. And then it’s made
into new products.
Presenter
But more transport means more pollution.
Peter
Yes, you’re right – it does. But recycling old materials uses
a lot less energy than making new materials. It really is
much better to recycle, believe me. In fact, about …

It’s Christmas next week.
B
Yes, I’m looking forward to it.
A
I’m not.
B
What’s the matter?
A
I can’t find any presents for my family and I don’t have any time
to go shopping.
B
You ought to look on the internet for ideas. There’s a lot of
choice.
A
Good idea. Thanks.
2 A
Are you all right?
B
No. I have to go to a party tonight.
A
So, what’s wrong?
B
I hate all the clothes I’ve got. They’re really old.
A
I think you’ve got some lovely clothes.
B
No, they’re all awful.
A
You’d better throw them away and buy some new ones.
B
I would if I had some money.
A
Oh.
3 A
You look really sad. Are you OK?
B
Not really.
A
What’s the problem?
B
I don’t get on very well with my parents. We always argue at
home. It’s really difficult.
A
It’s difficult, I know. But … if I were you, I’d tell them how you
feel.
B
Should I? They don’t understand me.
A
They will if you try to sit down and talk to them.
B
Do you think so? OK, maybe I’ll try to do that.
4 A
What’s the matter with you?
B
Nothing.
A
Come on, you can tell me.
B
My best friends don’t want to go around with me any more. I
don’t know what’s wrong.
A
I’ve had that problem before.
B
Have you? So, what can I do?
A
I think you should ask them what the problem is. Maybe you
upset them, and you don’t know it.
B
Are you sure?
A
Yes, I am
B
OK. I’ll do that.
5 A
Hey, this place is a mess. What’s up?
B
My room’s always a mess. But today I thought I’d try and tidy it
up.
A
Yes, you’ve got too many things. Look at all those CDs. They’re
mostly really old groups. Look at this – The Clash – you don’t
listen to them any more, do you?
B
Nah. I’ve got lots of CDs I never listen to.
A
You should try to sell them on the internet. You know, on one of
those websites where people can buy things from other people.
B
I can’t. They’re all in bad condition.
A
Oh … Never mind. You’ll have to give them to someone, then.
Have you got the Ramones? I like them.

Interviewer
Hello and welcome back to The Music Show. And with
me here in the studio is Julio Gonzalez, a Cuban
musician who moved to London from his home town
of Havana. Welcome to the show, Julio.
Julio
Thank you.
Interviewer
So, Julio, how long have you been in London?
Julio
About three years.
Interviewer
And how have you found it?
Julio
Well, very different from Cuba, of course – and I don’t
just mean the weather!
Interviewer
No, I’m sure. Is the music scene in London very
different?
Julio
It is, yes. London is great – there’s a lot of variety here.
I’ve been able to meet different musicians and learn
to play different instruments.
Interviewer
What instruments have you learnt to play since you
arrived in Britain?
Julio
I’ve only really tried to play two new instruments
seriously in Britain. The first one I tried was the
electric guitar, and I enjoyed playing that.
Interviewer
You hadn’t played that in Cuba?
Julio
No, I hadn’t. But it was easy. There’s a long tradition of
acoustic guitar playing, in Cuba of course, so I’d learnt
to play the acoustic guitar as a child.
Interviewer
And was the acoustic guitar your main instrument in
Cuba?
Julio
It was for a couple of years, yes, and it was the first
instrument I learnt. Then later, when I was about
twelve, I had a wonderful music teacher. She
introduced me to the piano.
Interviewer
And did you prefer that?
Julio
Well, I like them both really.
Interviewer
And did you play any other instruments in Cuba?
Julio
I’d tried the drums when I was at university, but I
wasn’t very successful. I realised after I’d played them
for six months that I definitely wasn’t a drummer!
Interviewer
You mentioned playing two new instruments since
you came to London. What was the other one?
Julio
I decided to try something completely different – the
saxophone.
Interviewer
Wow! How was that?
Julio
Great. But I’m still learning. I think it takes years to be
a good saxophonist.
Interviewer
So, you’re not going to play the saxophone at your
concert next week, then.
Julio
Definitely not! I’m happy being the guitarist, but I do
enjoy trying other instruments for fun. Most musicians
… I know are interested in playing as many
instruments as they can …
