The customs of Christmas as we know it come from the traditional
celebration of the birth of Christ, which was combined with the
harvest and winter solstice festivals in ancient Rome. From ancient
times, the celebration has involved making offerings and decorating
with evergreens, as well as exchanging gifts.
The custom of exchanging Christmas cards began in the 1400s in
England, with people sending greetings written on wood-block
prints. The first modern Christmas cards were printed in the 1800s,
and the custom spread around the world. Today, many people send
Christmas cards along with wishes for happiness in the New Year.
