A New Life
Michael came to Turkey in 2002. He (1) be a school teacher in Scotland but had become bored, so he (2) all his savings to retrain - to be an English language teacher. When he came to Turkey he had a few problems adjusting to the new culture, and his new job was not easy either. There was a lot for him to (3) .
First, Michael had to (4) the sound of the call for prayers. When Michael arrived in Istanbul, he (5) sleeping soundly all through the night - his house in the UK was in a very remote area and there were no night-time disturbances. In Turkey, however, Michael's apartment was next door to a mosque, and he was woken up very early every morning by the call to prayer. Fortunately, he managed to slowly (6) it and nowadays he rarely, if ever, wakes up at morning prayer time.
The mosquitoes are a different matter, however! On his arrival in Turkey, Michael definitely (7) getting up in the middle of the night to kill mosquitoes which were trying to eat him alive - he still (8) it yet! In the summer, he's very irritable in the mornings, because he doesn't get enough sleep. He did once try a product called Raid, but he was allergic to it so he couldn't (9) it for long. Michael loves the Turkish people but he can't (11) some of the things they do. Why do so many taxi drivers drive like maniacs?
