DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE (TECHNIQUE / SKILL)

Defending In The Modern Game 3 v 3

A Practice to help players improve techniques in team defending - pressure & support

This practice stresses the roles of players in providing pressure & support, & extra cover

ORGANISATION

Players play in a 15 x 24 metre grid With two 5 metre end zones

1. Three Reds pass ball between them in end zone, as do 3 yellows

2. On Coaches signal all 3 reds leave area - must pass ball out not run

3. As soon as 3 reds moves out, all 3 yellows get out fast to close down 3 attackers

4. 3 Defenders must sort out roles 0f (i) Pressure (2) Cover (3) Extra Cover, as soon as possible

5. Decision Making - Roles change

KEY OBSERVATION

ALL Defenders React - as soon as possible. React. Get out fast - Brakes!!

First (Nearest) Defender PRESS - as close as possible - stop forward play

Second Defender SUPPORT First - Angle & Distance-see your attacker & ball

Third Defender EXTRA SUPPORT - Angle & Distance - protect other 2

Changing Roles - In - Out - Out OR Out - In - Out / Who Presses - Who Covers - Do we need Extra Cover - What next

6. Decision Making - Pressure / Cover / Help / Communication -

7. End Product - If we win it, Counter / Delay / Frustrate / stop forward play

NOTES

Make practice match like - 2 groups in zone keeping possession - then a game practice

Must Play offside - get attackers to keep possession in front of defenders - simple

Attackers get width to pose problems for defenders - Defenders compact - Distances

Investigate the roles of all three in differing situations - Decision Making & Communication. Defending to WIN back the ball - Team work - Rewards v Down side
